Raising children to
become decent and respon­
sible adults is a com plex
and challenging job that is
becoming increasingly dif­
ficult in our society. To be
a person o f good character,
youth must develop strengths
o f the 4 “H ’s” : head - they
must know what is good;
heart - they must desire to do
the good; hands - they must
be willing to do good; and
health - they must develop
a lifestyle that supports the
desire and willingness to do
good. The Morrow County
4-H program strives to de­
velop good character in 4-H
members.
Qualities that define
good character have been
debated by various groups
but in 1992, the Josephson

help o f scholars, parents,
youth workers, and others
published the Aspen Decla­
ration. This declaration has
become the cornerstone for
the character development
education programs in the
United States. The Aspen
Declaration states:
-The next generation
will be the stewards o f the
world.
-The well being o f
society needs citizens with
good character.
-People do not au­
tom atically develop good
moral character. Children
must be taught so that they
develop the values and abili­
ties necessary for moral de­
cision making and conduct.

tion is based on core ethical
values - pillars o f character
development - trustworthi­
ness, respect for others, re­
sponsibility, fairness, caring,
and citizenship.

and socio-economic differ­
ences.
-A lthough charac­
ter education is first and
foremost an obligation o f
faith communities, the com­
munity in general, schools,
and youth and family serv­
ing organizations are also
responsible.
-Youth have a better
chance o f learning moral
values if all groups work to­
gether to teach and reinforce
moral values.
-Every adult must
take responsibility to model
and teach the pillars o f char­
acter development.
You can see that al­
though this Declaration was
only developed in 1992,
4-H, as the youth program
o f the land-grant Universi­
ties (Oregon State Univer­
sity) has been using similar
guidelines for the past 95
years.
Open Class
premiums paid
in cash
The Fair once again
will be paying Open Class
premiums in cash. This will
be done on Friday, August
13, only from the hours of
9-12 and 1-3. So kids and
adults come and get some
spending money for your
open class exhibits.
