arship for 2008 from Land
O’Lakes, Inc. and Winfield
Solutions, LLC (wholly
owned by Land O’Lakes,
Inc.
The award w inners
are high school seniors who
will enroll in a two- or four-
year agronomy or a related

crop production program
in the fall and who demon­
strate leadership abilities
and high academic perfor­
mance. Each scholarship
winner will receive $1,000.
Since its formation
16 years ago, the Careers in
Agriculture scholarship pro­
gram as awarded more than
$440,000 in scholarships to
rural youth.
“We are continually
amazed by the quality of
applicants and the potential
they hold for the future of
our industry,” Matt Fanta,
director of Marketing and
Solutions, Winfield Solu­
tions, said. “The Careers
in Agriculture Scholarship
program is just another way
we demonstrate our commit­
ment to the future develop­
ment of the cooperative
system and the farm com­
munity.”
University of Idaho announces
113th commencement candidates
Many dressed up while others
sported flip flops, but regardless of a
choice in wardrobe some 1,400 University
of Idaho students celebrated their educa­
tional accomplishments at the university’s
statewide commencement ceremonies this
spring. Ceremonies took place April 30
in Bois?, May 1 in Idaho Falls, May 5 in
Coeur d’Alene and May 10 in Moscow.
A total of 1,917 students are
eligible for the graduation this May from
the University of Idaho. These include 1,301
baccalaureate degrees, 95 law degrees, 68
doctoral degrees, 23 specialist degrees and
353 master’s degrees. Local graduates were:
Julie Ann Morter of Heppner with a bach­
elor’s degree injustice studies, Meghan Marie
McCabe of lone w ith a bachelor’s degree in
animal science, and David Lynn Miller of
Irrigon with a bachelor’s degree in fishery
resources.

Join the Heppner branch of the Oregon Trail Li­
brary District and discover the amazing world of insects.
The 2008 Summer Reading-Program is open to young
people, pre-school through sixth grade with books, pro­
grams, prizes and a lot of fun.
Pre-registration for Summer Reading begins on
Friday, June 6. More information and a complete schedule
of events will also be available on Friday, June 6. Programs
begin on Friday, June 13 and end on Friday, August 1. All
programs of free of charge.
Laptop raffle winner announced
The laptop computer raffle, which was organized
by Christine Raible as a fund raiser for her People to
People Ambassador Program, is over and a winner has
been drawn. The drawing was held on Friday, May 30, in
lone. Tucker Rice, of the Bank of Eastern Oregon, served
as the official ticket puller. The winner was Lena McEl-
ligott of lone. Raible looks forward to reporting back on
her trip when she returns this summer.
Holly Rebekah Lodge to
hold On house
shower
Sunday, June 8, the Holly Rebekah Lodge in
Lexington will have a house shower for Gene and Chirella
Wallace whose house burnt down recently. The shower will
be held at 2 p.m. As you can imagine they are in need of
about everything. Cake and refreshments will be served
and we invite the entire community of Heppner, lone and
Lexington to attend and help get these people on their
feet again.

for June 6
The Morrow County
Dryland Crop Tour will be
held on Friday, June 6.
Topics of discussion
during the Morrow County
Dryland Crop Tour will
include soft white winter
wheat variety performance
under late-seeding condi­
tions.
Larry Lutcher, Ex­
tension Agronomist with Or­
egon State University, says,
“This tour will be unique
- we’ve had a very dry year
in Morrow County,” and he
describes the local, variety
testing program as “survival
of the fittest.”
Also included in the
tour is a demonstration of
dark northern spring wheat
varieties. Don Horneck,
OSU Extension Agronomist,
will talk about a topic that is
on everyone’s mind—the ni­
trogen fertilizer situation—
supply and demand, prices,
and what thefl'uture holds.

vide insight on the current
wheat market and price ex­
pectations during and after

the early promotion for out­
standing performance dur­
ing all phases of the train­
ing cycle. Training which
included classroom study
and practical instruction
on naval customs, first aid,
firefighting, water safety and
survival, and shipboard and
aircraft safety. An emphasis
was also placed on physical
fitness.
Van Cleave is a 2006
graduate of Heppner High
School.
