They are Emily Rietmann, Whitney Matthews, Sean Murray, Kip Krebs, Kelsey Wolff and Alan Rietmann. The six students were selected out of 23 applicants on the basis of academic achievement, chosen field of study, financial need, school par ticipation, degree of effort the student has made in seeking sources for college and personal characteristics for success and school citizenship. Emily Rietmann is the daughter of Joe and Donna Rietmann from lone. She is planning to attend Washington State University and Honors College in the fall to pursue an education in environmental law. She is very active in school playing varsity volleyball, basketball, tennis and track. She served as class officer in 2008. She has participated in many community activi ties, serving as 4H ambassador, Tri-County 4H camp counselor, volunteer referee and school reading volunteer. A member and officer of lone High School National Honor Society and student body officer. Whitney Matthews attends Hep pner High School and will be attending Boise State University where she will take classes for pre-medicine. She is the daughter of Skip and Sandy Matthews of Heppner. She has been on the honor roll for four years and has served as an officer of National Honor Society. She is a member of FFA, FBLA and Stars. She was a volunteer for Heppner Chamber and won Student of the Year from the Heppner Chamber of Commerce in 2008. She is a willing volunteer for many other commu nity organizations. Sean Murray of Heppner is the son of John and Ann Murray. He has been accepted to Carroll College in Helena, MT, Oregon State University, University of Portland, and the University of Idaho. He plans to pursue a degree in the medical field, either pharmacy or medicine. Murray has served on the student council as Student Body secretary and is senior class vice president. He was selected for honor band and is a member of the National Honor Society. He was in the knowledge bowl all four years of school and played varsity football his junior and senior years. He is active in the community working on Mus tang Mop-Up, an assisted living volunteer, Kip Krebs from lone is the son of Skye and Penny Krebs. He is considering Oregon State University, working towards a degree in agricultural business manage ment. He is an active volunteer in his com munity, working on Wallowa County Fair Grounds clean-up for five years, working at Portland Homeless Shelter, working with the youth group and a book fair volunteer. He is a member of the National Honor So ciety, Student Body president and football team captain. He has played varsity foot ball, basketball and track. He was a state finalist for Wendy’s Heisman award. Kelsey Wolff is the daughter of Karen and Tom Wol IT of Heppner. She has been accepted to Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA where she will be pursuing a degree in business administration. Wolff is the president of the National Honor So ciety this year. She is on the Knowledge Master team, band, pep band, honor band, FBLA, Stars, choir, debate club and in the talented and gifted program. She won the East Oregonian Outstanding student award and the Oregon Music Teachers association certificate of award. Alan Rietmann from lone is the son of Brian and Sharon Rietmann. He plans on attending Oregon State Univer sity and Linn-Benton Community College using their degree partnership program. Reitmann is going to pursue courses in the agricultural business field. He is a member of the National Honor Society, class of ficer, a member of International Club and active in sports. He played varsity football, basketball and track. He is very involved in community activities as a member of St. Williams youth group, lone Green House volunteer, and Cardinal Booster Club mem bership drive. The board of directors of the schol arship trust include Bill Rietmann, presi dent; Barb Hayes, vice-president; Del LaRue, treasurer; Sharon Harrison, sec retary; Missy Cutsforth, Martha Munkers and Carri Grieb. The South Morrow County Scholarship Trust was established several years ago wit the mission to grow funds to provide scholarships to graduating senior from Heppner and lone High Schools and to eventually take the place of the Troedson Scholarship Fund which will be discontin ued in the year 2023. Memorial Day ceremony to be held in lone On Monday, May 26, lone American Legion Post 95# and the Legion Auxiliary are planning a Memorial Day event. A memorial ceremony honor ing lone soldiers killed in combat will begin at the flag pole at the lone Com munity School at 10:30 a.m. The event will then move to the legion hall where a Senior Center Menu Nazarene/7th Day Adventist Church members will be serving lunch on Wednesday, May 21. The menu will include scrambled eggs, ham and sausage, hash browns, stewed apples and raisins, tomato juice, biscuits and gravy, and cinnamon rolls. The community is welcome to stop by and have lunch. Wouldn't it be even better to have your children learn so they could make you a pie and/or en ter it in the dessert auction during Celebrate Heppner days for someone else to The crop science class at lone Community School attended an over night field trip to Portland and Corvallis to get a first hand look at the College of Agriculture at Oregon State University and the market ing and transportation issues at the Port of Portland. “My favorite part was OSU,” said senior Max Trahan. “Col lege really is attainable.” The trip was made possible by a grant from the lone Education Foun dation, students were able to observe the marketing strategies and transporta tion logistics of the Port of Portland and how it affects cities and towns upstream from Portland. Marketing director for the port, Steve Mickelson, personally es corted the group through the loading docks and set them up in the executive board room as he talked about the port operations.
