Accepted changes that ruffle feathers
Letter to the Editor:
The word ‘change’ is currently used as a type o f
mantra. Change can be good if it benefits the majority and
doesn’t hurt anyone. However there are some presently
accepted changes that ruffle my feathers. One instance
is when someone addresses a group of men and women
as “Hey, Guys!” Since when did women become guys?
Wouldn't it be just as easy to say, ‘Hello folks’ or Hi
people?’ Then there’s the current use of the word “troops.”
Webster defines troops as a group of people organized as a
unit, such as soldiers or actors, who are working together.
So when did troop become singular - as is often stated
in the news when referring to one individual military
person? My former English teacher must be twisting in
her shroud.
No we have the presidential hopefuls chanting the
word “change.” These individuals propose that, if elected,
they have enough influence to instigate immediate changes
including socialized medicine or subsidized higher educa
tion. Then why haven’t they used this power to bring about
changes while serving as senators?
The word change definitely needs to be applied to
Congress. This country elects representatives who are sup
posed to act in the best interest of the majority o f people.
Yet some of these officials seem to be more concerned with
getting re-elected or using that position as a stepping-stone
to a higher office. How can senators be representing their
constituents while spending many months on the campaign
trail? It’s about time that we had senators and representa
tives willing to work towards a consensus on major issues.
Representatives from both political parties are guilty o f
not diligently working to resolve major issues like illegal
immigration and funding for social security, things that
could have and should have been dealt with years ago by
Congress.
