Not Utopia, but eternal happiness
By Fr. Gerry Condon
I suppose that everyone has given some thought to
Utopia. Perhaps the sad part is that we always come to the
conclusion that it is not going to happen in our lifetime,
or perhaps ever happen in our world. So it may be just a
dream. But surely we must have dreams to rise above the
confusion that exists in our world. Surely we have to have
dreams to rise above the clouds and think o f eternity. Surely
we can have dreams to envision our world motivated by
lofty ideals. I wonder what our world would be like if
everyone lived by the principals o f Jesus Christ.
What would our world be like if there was true
peace, not just the absence o f war, the real true Shalom.
Imagine the parents who would be relieved o f the anxiety
o f their children being killed at war. Imagine no destruc
tion o f property, homes, lives. Imagine the vast sums o f
money that could be poured into the relief o f starvation,
poverty, the health o f the general populace. Imagine the
great sums o f money that could be invested in research
and technology.
Imagine a world in which all people lived by ju s
tice. There would be no need for police, for court systems,
for jails. Imagine a world in which no one polluted the
atmosphere, drug dealers did not corrupt youth. Imagine
if everyone lived by the virtues o f prudence and temper
ance and fortitude.
But, alas, we are not living in a perfect world.
Consequently, Jesus Christ came into our world. He suf
fered and died for us. He did that, not that we would have
a Utopia in this life, but that we would have eternal hap
piness in heaven.
