T he H e p p n e r Jr.
High Wrestling team trav
eled to Boardman on March
1 to compete in the Eastern
Oregon Regional Qualifier.
The tournament was a quali
fier for the state wrestling
tournament. Since there are
no size classifications for
middle school, all schools
from the region with wres
tling programs were present
including teams from Baker,
Hermiston, Pendleton, Hood
River, The Dalles, Board-
amn, Milton Freewater, La
G rande, O ntario, Joseph,
lrrigon. Vale, North Powder
and Union.
Austin Harris, Jar
ed Lemmon, Curtis M ar
tin, John Nelson and Zech
H intz all m ade it to the
cham pionship semifinals.
Josh Williams made it to
the consolation semifinals.
Under last year’s criteria,
where the top six placers
advanced to state, all six
would have qualified for the
state tournament. This year
the standards were changed
to allow only the top four
placers to advance to state,
making it necessary for the
six M ustangs to continue

partners all year and have
pushed each other to become
state caliber w restlers.
They are only the
second and third wrestlers
ever from Heppner to qual
ify for the state tournament,
but with the growth o f the
program and the progress
o f the young team, expect
to see state qualifiers and
state placers in the coming
years from the high school.
When the Jr. High wrestlers
move up to the high school
team, the experience they’ve
gained at the middle school
level will prepare them well
to com pete against other
2A schools. B esides the
budding Jr. High and High
School teams, Heppner has
also been offering a Colt
wrestling club for the past
three years that includes
kids from first through fifth
grade.
Also competing in
the tournament for the Mus
tangs were Aidan Wright,
Cody Nelson, Alex Smith,
Justyn Peck, Earl Proph-
eter, Treston Maben, Justin
Smith, Andrew Bara, Con
ner Pappas, Tim Nelson and
Garrett Gibbs.
