lone boys end season with opening round loss
The lone Boys’ bas
ketball season came to a
heartbreaking close in the
opening round o f the Big
Sky Tournament on Thurs
day, February 14, with a
39-35 loss to South Wasco
C ounty at U m atilla High
School. The Cardinals fin
ished their season with a
16-9 record overall.
In th e ir p re v io u s
meeting, early in the league
season in D ecem ber, the
Cardinals were thoroughly
beaten by the R edsides.
From the start o f this game
though, they came in look
ing determined to keep the
R edsides from repeating
that outcome. The Redsides
struck first but the Cards put
their first score on the board
w ith 1 Vi minutes gone when
Clay Morter fed a nice pass
to Kip Krebs. South Wasco
built the lead to 7-2 before
lone ran o ff a 10-2 run,
taking the lead 12-9. South
Wasco scored twice more
before Kevin Fow ler hit
Kip Krebs under the basket
on the press break to put the
Cards up 14-13 after one.
Clay M orter hit a
jumper with a minute gone
in the second q u arter to
put lone up 16-13. Alan
Rietmann had six points in
the quarter as the Cardinals
kept the lead throughout the
period, leading at the half,
23-19.
Justin A rch er got
things started in the third
quarter, hitting a little jumper
to put the Cards out in front
by six points, the biggest
lead o f the game. However
the Redsides went on a 6-2
run to narrow the gap to two
points midway through the

fo rd
quarter. Defense and chilly
shooting kept both teams
from making a Field goal
from about the 4 Vi m in
ute mark on, with the only
scores in that time period
coming from the free throw
line. The score at the end o f
three was tied at 28.
The Redsides nailed
a three pointer 10 seconds
into the fourth quarter and
then for almost four min
utes, neither team scored.
Ju stin A rch er broke the
drought w ith a full court lay
in to make the score 30-31 in
favor of the Redsides. Thirty
seconds later, Kip Krebs
banked in a shot and the
Cards took the lead 32-31.
The Redsides tied the game
with a free throw' and then
took the lead on an offen
sive rebound put back. With
1:55 remaining in the game,
South Wasco swished two
free throws to take a 36-32
lead. Paul Hams pulled the
Cards back into contention,
hitting a three pointer with
1:26 left in the game. But the
Redsides were cool under
pressure, stalling on a one
point lead and forcing the
Cards to foul. Connecting
on three of four free throws
in the last 40 seconds, the
R edsides m ade the final
margin 39-35.
“This was the hard
est loss 1 have ever expe
rienced with a team,” said
Coach Dennis Stefani. “ I
know we were the better
team. We just lost our con
fidence in the fourth quarter
and stopped believing we
could win.”
The Cards were led
in scoring by Paul Hams
with nine points. Kip Krebs
had eight and Alan R iet
m ann, Justin A rcher and
Clay Morter had six each.
The Cards suffered through
a tough shooting night, mak
ing just 28% from the field
and 10% from the three
point line. Throughout the
season, the team had aver
aged 40% from the field and
26% from behind the arc.
Paul Hams paced the
team in assists like he had
all year, tallying five in the
game. Hams totaled 156 as
sists this season, averaging
6.2 per game. Clay Morter
led the team on the board
with 10 rebounds. Morter
was the team rebound leader
during the season, notching
a season total o f 215 and
averaging 8.6 per game.
Coach Dennis Ste
fani took the loss hard as he
and his senior-laden squad
had high hopes. “ I’m very
proud o f all o f our kids.”

Michelle Stone teaches a dance to students at Heppner Elemen
tary School.
We’ve all heard o f “Dancing With the Stars,” but
what about dancing with th e.. .Teachers?
The students at Heppner Elementary School are
two stepping their way through class these days thanks to
teachers Michelle Stone and Wendy Cannin and their unit
on dancing. Stone, who teaches music, and Cannin, who
teaches PE, have teamed up to teach students in grades
K-6 the moves to popular dances such as the Makarena,
the Hustle, the Chicken Dance, the Electric Slide, several
country line dances and more.
“These students love to move and w hat better way
to channel their energy than through the use o f dancing
and music,” says Stone. “The students love it. They are
even having contests to see who can do The Makarena
the fastest.”
The timing couldn't be better for the students at
HES. On March 7, the Heppner Elementary Parent Teacher
Club is presenting Steppin' Out With the Family, a din
ner and dance event for students and their families. “We
want to provide a fun, safe and unique experience for HES
families and people who support the students here." stated
Carri Grieb, PTC president.
The fun-filled night will include a seated dinner,
dancing with music provided by Desert Sounds Mobile
DJ Service, family photos, door prizes and more. Family
tickets are available for $35. Extended family members
and friends of HES can purchase tickets tor S 10/person. To
learn more about the event or to purchase tickets, call Dar-
cee Mitchell at 676-5717 or Carri Grieb at 989-8353.
