Mustang wrestlers compete in district tournament
By M ark L em m on
The Heppner Mus
tangs wrestling team trav
eled to Joseph for the Spe-
eial District IV tournament
on February 8 and 9. The
Mustangs took 13 wrestlers
to the tournament filling nine
o f the 14 weight classes.
Last year the Mus
tangs had one placer and
finished ninth out o f 10
teams by scoring a total o f
23 points in the tournament.
The team improved substan
tially over that performance
by placing six wrestlers in
the top six and scoring 66.5
points.
H e p p n e r's h ig h
est placer was sophomore
Chance Day who repeated
his third place finish from
last year. Day made it to
the semi finals on Saturday
m orning before losing to
the eventual district cham
pion Matt Holloway from
Crane, a returning district
champion and fourth place
finisher at state in 2007. It
was Day's only loss in the
regular tournament.
Because only two
c o m p e tito rs from each
w eight class advance to
state, there is a wrestle off
between the third place and
second place finishers at the
conclusion of the regulation
tournament matches if the
two have not previously
met at districts. Day had a
wrestle off against Colton
Ketcher, the second place
finisher also from Crane.
The Crane senior prevailed
in the bout and won the right
to return to the state tourna
ment for his second time.

Wacy Coil all brought home
fifth place medals from the
tournament.
J u n io r S p e n c e r
Palmer and Senior Taylor
Hodges both won medals
for six th place. H odges
only began wrestling in the
second half o f the season
this year.
G ran t S m ith , Ty
ler Robinson, Trent Miles,
Jo rd an W right, M ichael
Hawks, Justin Yocom and
Alex Fuentes also competed
for Heppner. Miles is one
o f the only two seniors that
finished his w restling ca
reer for the Mustangs this
weekend.
“ I'm really proud
o f these boys and the effort
they put out this year,” said
head coach Troy Morgan.
“ Wrestling is the oldest and
one o f the toughest sports in
the world. It teaches many
lessons that w ill have a
positive impact on the rest
o f their lives. Just to come
out and finish the season
says a lot about the charac
ter o f these young men. We
set a team goal to have six
placers. We met that and
scored nearly three times
the number o f points in the
district tournament as last
year. That’s quite an accom
plishment for such a young
team. We’re really going to
miss our seniors next year,
but w e’re also going to wel
come back a lot o f returning
veterans with some valuable
experience.”
Crane was the Spe
cial District IV champion,
finishing ahead o f last years
champion Elgin by just three
points to win their first dis
trict championship.
