By Mark Lemmon

High wrestling team got its
season underway on Janu
ary 17 in a tournament in
Pendleton. The Jr. Mustangs
show ed w hat the future

will look like as they faced
teams from middle schools
in Pendleton, Herm iston,
La G rande, M ilton Free
water, Irrigon and Heppner.
Combined, the team won 19
matches and lost 20.
Middle school teams
do not compete based on
school size. Wrestlers from
all schools in the region
contend in an Eastern Or
egon qualifying tournament
at the end o f the season for
the opportunity to go to
state and compete against
the best middle school wres
tlers at their weight class in
Oregon.
Aidan W right and
Garrett Gibbs led the team by
winning all o f their matches
and placing first in their
brackets. After easily win
ning his first two matches
with pins, Wright won his
final match in a close one
point decision. Gibbs won

The JV girls fought hard and all the way through
the game to pull a win from the Weston-McEwen Tigers.
In the first quarter the teams were tied at four but
by the half Heppner had pulled away by three, putting a
half-time score of Mustangs 13 and Tiger-Scots 10. The
Tiger-Scots came out and scored 17 points in the second
half, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Mustangs. The final
score was Heppner 28 and Weston McEwen 27.
Brynna Rust led the team with 10 point. Kassey
Wilson and Keshwana Telamantes each scored six with
Wilson pulling down six rebounds and getting four steals
for the night. Kaylee Helfrecht and Lindsay Cutsforth each
had two points, and Taighler Dougherty had one to help
seal the Mustang win.
The JV boys were unable to stop the Tiger-Scots
from taking the lead before the half. With a half-time
score o f Mustangs 16 and Tiger-Scots 30, it meant that
the Mustangs had a lot o f work to do. In the second half
Heppner outscored Weston-McEwen by 11 points, but it
wasn’t enough to catch the lead, putting the final score
Heppner 46 and Weston-McEwen 49.
Chris Lien scored 15, Jordan Hatfield had 10, Ian
Murray scored six, Bryan Holland had five, Alex Pickles
scored four and Jared Hedman, Kyle Fuchs and Dan White
each scored two for the night.
The varsity girls were outscored by three points
in the first quarter by the Tiger-Scots, but that only fueled
the fire for the girls to come back and take the lead in the
second quarter and never give it up. The Mustangs beat the
Tiger-Scots with a 10 point lead, leaving the final score as
Heppner 49 and Weston-McEwen 39.
Katie Kilkenny scored 15 points, Megan Orr sunk
in 14, Taylor Kempas had six and Kylie Doherty scored
four for the night. Both Brynna Rust and Jessica Hughes
put in three points and Catherine McElligott and Kristen
VanCleave each scored two for the night.
The varsity boys took the lead early in the game
and held onto it until Weston McEwen tied the game at
half. With a half time score o f 31 all, the mustangs came
out of the locker fired up to take their lead back. By the
third quarter they had done that with a six point lead, and
than pulling that lead to a 13 point gain putting the final
score at Heppner 66 and Weston McEwen 53.
Jared Huddleston was the lead scorer for the night
with 18 and Nacho Elguezabal right behind him with 17
points for the night. Lane Bailey put in 13, and AJ Rauch
sunk eight points. Brent Eckman scored five, Bryan Hol
land and Jordan Hatfield each scored two and Braden Britt
scored one point for the night, helping the Mustangs keep
the win away from Weston McEwen.

After trailing by as

fourth quarter, the lone Lady
C ard in als m ade it clo se
in their Friday m atch up
with league rival, Condon-
W heeler. O utscoring the
Lady Knights 19-12 in the
final quarter, lone got to
within seven points before
running out o f time on the
upset. Condon-Wheeler pre
vailed in the game 46-39.
The Lady Cards got
the first points on the board
thanks to a scorebook tech
nical and Emily Rietmann
hitting both free throw s.
Shots by Beth Morter and
Teonna Vandever kept lone
close in the early going.
However, Condon-Wheeler
went on an 8-0 run to finish
the first quarter up 14-6. In
the second quarter, Kylee
Svetich had four points and
Tiana Camarillo and Brenna
Rietmann put in two each,
lone outscored C ondon-
Wheeler 8-7 in the period
and went to the locker room
at halftime trailing 21-14.
The Lady Knights
started the third quarter w ith
an 8-0 run and finished it
with a 5-0 run, allow ing
lone six points in the interim
to stretch out their lead at the
end of three, 34-20. But the
Lady Cards hit seven field
goals to Condon-Wheeler’s
two and connected on 5-7
free throw s to close the
fifteen point gap to the fi
nal margin of seven. Kylee
Svetich and Emily Rietmann
each had six points in the
quarter to lead the team.
Kylee Svetich and
Emily Rietmann led the team
in scoring with 10 points
each. Beth M orter added
nine, Brenna Rietmann had
five, Tiana Camarillo and
Teonna Vandever had two
each and Tori Heagy added
one.
“We played well at
times during the game but
did not have an answer for
Megan G reenfield in the
post. Even w ith G re en
field getting her points, I
thought we played good
team defense overall," said
Coach Ryan Rudolf. “ We
struggled at times on of
fense, especially at the start
o f the third quarter when
they scored the first seven
points and took a 14 point
lead. But the girls didn't
give up and battled back to
make it close at the end.”
“We have played well the
last few games and hope
fully we can get over the
hump and get some victories
next week.”
