Corps to host information
meeting for Willow Creek
Lake irrigation proposai
By Merlyn Robinson
Like instant replay,
Kathleen Hisler readily re
calls a century o f past events
as though they had hap
pened yesterday. Her excel
lent memory belies the fact
that this upbeat centenarian
will be 100 years young on
February 21, 2008. A birth
day celebration with family
and friends is planned for
February 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.
at Willow Creek Terrace As
sisted Living. Since October
2003 Kathleen has been a
resident o f this facility that
coincidently was built on
property that once belonged
to her father, Frank Mona
han, when she was a child.
Maybe her longevity
can be attributed to her Irish
genes. Her mother, Marie
Farley M onahan, lived to
age 90. Perhaps a contrib
uting factor to a long life is
Kathleen’s positive attitude,
her unshakable faith and her
contentment with her life
style. She said she wouldn’t
change anything in the past.
“I was bom to be a wife and
mother and it was a blessing
to be with someone you love
for 72 years,” Kathleen said.
Her husband, Paul Hisler
II, (who was that important
‘someone’), passed away in
2000 at age 92.
Kathleen was bom in
Condon to Irish descendants
Frank and Marie Monahan.
She is the oldest o f four
siblings who were Jam es
Monahan, Mary Causey and
Patricia Barrie, all deceased.

years began by walking to
school in Heppner, a 1 Vi
mile hike. What she didn’t
know then is that a class
mate, Paul Hisler II, would
become her future husband.
Her growing up years were
governed by a very strict,
but loving father, Kathleen
says. Her dad decided his
daughters would grow up as
“proper young ladies” under
the guidance o f C atholic
parochial schools. Kathleen
attended St. Thomas Acad
emy in Condon, a Catholic
school in Mt. Angel, and
she graduated in 1927 from
St. Jo sep h ’s A cadem y in
Pendleton. K athleen’s ex
cellent singing voice devel
oped during those formative
years, but she says her piano
lessons at school were not
very enjoyable because a
nun would rap her fingers
with a ruler when she made
mistakes.
A fter high school,
Kathleen planned to become
a nurse. However, she lost
her heart to a dashing you

Tragedy had impacted her
husband’s life. His mother
died w hen Paul and his
sister, M arguerite H isler
Chapin, were three and four
years old. The father also
passed away when Paul was
15. Paul’s father had built a
large house on the ranch he
acquired after 12 years o f
working for former owner
E dw ard Day. A d d itio n al
acreage was also added. To
provide for his children, the
father placed the ranch in a
trust and named a guardian.
After Paul’s father died in
1923, trustees rented out the
ranch for six years.

Portland w here they had
a brief honeym oon at the
Imperial Hotel. They had to
wait almost a year, until Paul
was 21, before they could
assume management o f the
Hisler ranch. During that
time they lived and worked
with the Monahans on Wil
low Creek.
Thus began the rig
ors o f 67 years on a ranch 25
miles from Heppner at the
head o f Little Buttercreek.
Twenty o f those years were
without electricity, indoor
plumbing and other conve
niences. Their few posses
sions began with a milk cow
and a team o f horses given
to them by Kathleen’s father.
In order to stock this ranch
with a band o f sheep, they
obtained a loan from the lo
cal Farmer and Stockgrow-
ers Bank. But soon the Great
Depression o f the 30s, com
pounded by drought years,
caused the sheep market to
hit rock bottom. The young
couple had no income to pay
off their debt. Their frugal
lifestyle included kerosene
lamps and no refrigeration.
Like m ost ranchers then
they had meat, usually mut
ton, milk and eggs to sustain
them . K ath leen ’s accom
