Four Mustangs earn podium
placements at Riverside Rumble

The Mustang wres­
tling team traveled to Board-
man to compete in the Riv­
erside Rumble on Saturday,
January 5. The tournament
was a 13 team event with
team s from 1A through
5A, including a team from
Granger, WA that won the
tournament.
The M ustangs im­
proved on last year’s per­
formance at the same tour­
nament when no wrestlers
made it to the placing rounds
for Heppner. This year four
Mustangs earned places on
the podium at the end of the
night.
S p e n c e r P a lm e r
was the highest placer for
Heppner, earning a bronze
medal for third place at 152
pounds. Palmer’s only loss
on the day was to Trevor
Hess o f Colton, the number
two ranked wrestler in Or-
egon class 3A and runner
up in the state tournament
last year.
Chance Day finished
fourth for the M ustangs.
Grant Smith and Wacy Coil
each placed fifth in their
weight classes.
Dillon Lutcher also
earned team points for Hep­
pner with a pin over his
opponent from Liberty high
school, a 5Aschool in Hills­
boro.
Also competing for
the M ustangs w ere Jar-
reid Miller, Tyler Robinson,
Tomás Elguezabal, Justin
Yocom and Alex Fuentes. It
was Fuentes’ first competi­
tion as a wrestler.
The Mustangs will
have two home meets in
January. The first will be on
Tuesday evening, January
15, and the second will be on
Saturday, January 26.
It was an all day event for the Heppner wrestler who participated in the Riverside Rumber. Four wrestlers earned places on the

follow JV lead with wins

Heppner FFA to host taco feed
The Heppner FFA Chapter will be hosting a taco
feed during the basketball games on Saturday, January 12.
The feed will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will go through half­
time of the varsity boys’ game. The cost is $5 and includes
tacos, all the fixings, dessert and a drink.

January 2 4 - 4 p.m. at Riverside.
February 2 - 9 a.m. at The Dalles Tourney.
February 8 - 4 p.m. at Armand Larive.

February 2 1 - 4 p.m. at The Dalles.
February 2 6 - 4 p.m. at Heppner.
March 1 - Regional Qualifier (TBA).

let Elgin regain it, winning

game, the boys took the lead
from the start, scoring 12
points to Elgin's eight.
The boys did not let
Elgin get within 17 points
the second and third quar­
ter. At the end o f the fourth
quarter Heppner had a 24
point lead, putting the final
score Heppner 65 and Elgin
41.

the second quarter o f Satur­
day’s game after Elgin took
the lead in the first. Elgin
had the girls by five points at
the beginning o f the second
quarter. But at the end of
the second quarter Heppner
had Elgin by six points and
never looked back.
Heppner ended the
third quarter w ith an 18
point lead. Kaylee Helfrecht
led the team in scoring with
seven, Tori Lovgren had
six, Mercedes Garrett and
Taighler Dougherty had five,
Emily Thompson with four,
and the rest o f girls scored
two points each. The girls
finished their game 39-16,
with a 4-2 season.

Elgin was not able to catch
up in the second quarter with
Heppner having 26 points to

third quarter. The first and
fourth quarters were played
almost even but the second
and third quarter deficit was
too much to overcome. The
final score was 56-33 in
favor o f the Knights.

en. Alex Rietmann helped
out with five and Luke Brad-
field had four.
“It was a good team
effort on both ends,” said
Coach Jim Swanson. “ We
had good defense, rebound­
ing, hustle and passing.” He
was especially pleased that
the team kept their turnovers
down in the game.
An exciting finish
brought the crowd to its feet
as the JV team won their
first game o f the New' Year
at Cascade Locks on Janu­
ary 6. With under a minute
to go, Marco Juarez went to
the line to shoot two. Con-
necting on one, the score
was a seemingly safe 36-32.
However, the Pirates hustled
to their end o f the court and
connected on a three pointer
to make it a one point game,
36-35. With 2.6 seconds on
the clock, G unner Jessen
was fouled as he tried to
hold the ball until time ex­
pired. Jessen made the first

G unner Jessen led
the team in scoring with 11.
Also scoring for lone was
Tanner Rietmann with ten,

mann and Thomas Holland
with two each and Marco
Juarez with one.
In other statistical
categories. Tanner Rietmann
led the team with eight re­
bounds and RJ Ramos and
Marco Juarez each had four
assists.
“ It was a great win,”
said Coach Jim Swanson.
“ We needed this game to
get back on track." He was
delighted that the team con­
trolled the tempo and han­
dled the ball well with just
14 turnovers in the contest.
