Bredfield wins Human Fund Race
A view from the hill
By Doris Brosnan
Such a busy place
Willow Creek Terrace has
been since the traditional
Thanksgiving dinner sig
naled the beginning of the
holiday season. The many
visitors, the beautiful music,
and the camaraderie that
brought 2007 to a close give
residents reason to view this
New Year with hopes for
memorable times to come.
Residents enjoyed
hosting the hospice volun
teers in November for an
afternoon of OP Time Fid
dlers’ music. In December,
they enjoyed the musical
talents of the Heppner High
School choir, the Heppner
Elementary students, and
carolers from the First Chris
tian Church, the Church
of Latter Day Saints, All
Saints’ Episcopal and Hope
Lutheran Churches, and the
VanCleave family. Kenny
Turner delighted residents
and staff by coming by to
lead a sing-along at the
piano.
These and other
visitors on the hill experi
enced the added pleasure
of the decorations added
throughout the Terrace by
the staff. Some staff also
accompanied 13 residents
to the light parade in Hep
pner. Had it not been for a
quarantine resulting from a
cold-virus outbreak, more
visitors would have shared
more holiday moments with
the Terrace community.
Always up for some
fun and frivolity, the resi
dents and staff took time
for a “Flannel PJ Day” last
month, a day when everyone
was encouraged to spend the
day in relaxing PJ’s. And
any day of the week will
find many or all residents
participating in some form
of entertainment: Bingo and
crafts ottered by Nazarene
Church members Shirley
George and Eve Ironhawk;
card-playing led by Joe
Burleson and Shirley Rugg;
Bingo and lunch out at the
St. Patrick Senior Center;
sharing of the Heppner Ga
zette Times with Suzanne
Jepsen, Melissa Monaco,
Betty Carlson, or Sharon
Woodside; games or crafts
with members of the St.
Patrick Catholic Church;
weekday exercises with
staff; Saturday afternoon
matinee movies; and library-
book/tape exchanges with
Sally Walker and Suzanne
Jepsen.
Frequent visitors to
the Terrace, Jack and Jo
Meligan and the Hisler fam
ily have graciously donated
several Bingo prizes, adding
to the fun. Lyle and Virginia
Peck have continued the
garden-harvest donations
with selections from their
late garden, as well as some
holiday oranges. And the
Meligans and the Episcopal
Church members brought
some poinsettias, flowers,
and oranges to the Hill.
This month promises
more activity at the Terrace.
A Frisbee Toss will recog
nize National Frisbee Day
on January 13. National Hat
Day shares the calendar with
Winnie-the-Pooh Day on
January 18, so colorful and
stylish hats will grace the
heads of many residents and
statt', some of whom might
also wear a Pooh-themed
piece of costuming. Who
knows what National Pizza
Week will bring, beginning
on January 20?
Readers are invited
to do as the Terrace com
munity will be doing on
January 23: striving to otter
at least five compliments
to individuals on National
Compliment Day. This co
incides with National Pie
Day, so residents expect to
compliment the cook for her
pies that day!
Speaking o f the
Cook, this month’s Spotlight
shines brightly on Anne
Gump, who has earned the
respect of coworkers for her
leadership and teamwork
efforts and her positive at
titude. The residents love
her great cooking abilities
and the tastes of a new style
of recipes. “Anne is a great
addition to our team at Wil
low' Creek Terrace,” reports
Manager George Naims.
As life on the Hill fin
ishes up January with some
w ild outfits and chuckles on
National Clothes Clashing
Day and Global Belly Laugh
Day, the residents and staff
appreciate everyone who
has given their time, talents,
and treasures in 2007. “Your
gifts bring much Life, Love,
and Laughter into our home.
Thank you all, and may
you be blessed in this New
Year.”
Annual Holiday Playday held
by snowmobile club
The Four Comers Snowmobile Club of Heppner had their annual Holiday Playday
at Kelly Prairie Sunday, December 30.
Many snowmobile enthusiasts and their families were there to enjoy the fresh
powder snow, chili and hot dogs, and the annual poker run that paid out 100% of the
entry fees. A $2 entry fee and a good running sled around about a ten mile poker course
gave four lucky snowmobile riders a cash return. Curtis Zeller took first with a flush,
Jacob Lindsay came away with second sporting a hand of three aces, JeffCutsforth nailed
down third with three kings, and Gary Grabeal took a strong fourth with three queens.
The club will have other events this winter, for information about the club contact
Mike Gorman at 541-676-9623 or Cliff Dougherty at 541-676-5491.

Robin Bredfield,
fresh from competing in the
Las Vegas half marathon,
blew the field away to win
the inaugural Get Fit Hep
pner Human Fund Race on
New Year’s Day.
After starting out
slow, she quickened her
pace in the second half of
the 5K to w in in the runners
division.
Craig and Debbie
Gutierrez tied for first place
in the walking division.
There was some contro
versy at the finish line and
the judges conferred and
declared a tie.
Debbie and George
Koffler finished a distant
third and fourth place.
Unfortunately, Patty
Hughes was disqualified
near the end of the race as
the judges determined that
Pepper and Red Dog had
been dragging her for most
of the race.
Race organizers do
nated S100 for each entrant
to the Human Fund.
Plans are now being
formulated for the second
annual Get Fit Heppner Fun
Run/Walk.
Oregon East Symphony to present
“Phoenix Rising” concert

concert theme, “Phoenix
Rising,” the Symphony will
perform Stravinsky’s Fire
bird Suite on Saturday, Feb
ruary 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the
Vert Auditorium in Pend
leton. This energetic work,
often ranked as one of the
most popular works among
American audiences, was
chosen for performance very
shortly after the fire that
destroyed the Symphony
offices in March 2007.
In the second half of
the program, Jorja Fleezanis
(see below for her biogra
phy), concertmaster of the
Minnesota Orchestra and
one of the most respected
musicians in the world to
day, joins the OES as soloist
for Elgar’s Violin Concerto.
This concerto is perhaps the
ultimate challenge for any
violinist, w idely considered
the most epic and difficult
piece ever written for the
violin.
Michael Steinberg,
NPR commentator from
Performance Today and
author of the best selling lis
tening guides The Sympho
ny and The Concerto, will
be a special guest speaker.
Steinberg will be on hand to
guide audiences through this
fascinating program.
