lone boys knock off 2A opponents
The lone Boys’ Var
sity knocked off'a pair o f 2A
opponents in the down week
after Christmas, finding the
mojo that had been missing
from their game the previ
ous week.
Hosting Pilot Rock
on December 28, the Car
d inals w ere looking for
redemption from a l6ss the
previous week. The Christ
mas break served the Cards
well as they took an early
lead that they never relin
quished, setting the Rockets
on their heels. Five Cardinals
scored in the first quarter as
lone jumped out to a 15-6
lead. By half time, the Cards
built a 33-20 lead and were
penetrating the key as well
as hitting from the outside.
At the half, Alan Rietmann
had nine points which in
cluded a three-pointer and
several buckets from inside
the paint.
Pilot Rock went on
an 8-2 run to open the third
quarter, pulling to within
seven and then, moments
later, closing the gap to
within six. But the Cardi
nals responded each time,
rebuilding the lead to 10 and
above, ending the quarter
49-37. lone kept up the in
tensity in the fourth quarter,
stretching the lead out to 17
before sliding home with the
65-48 win.
Alan Rietmann led
the team in scoring with 19
points. Also in double fig
ures were Paul Hams with
12 and Clay Morter with 10.
Morter had a double-double
w ith 10 reb o u n d s to go
along with his points. Justin
Archer just missed a double
double with 10 rebounds
and nine points.
“ It was nice to see
them get going,” said Coach
D ennis Stefani. “ We got
out and ran the court very
well.” After being defeated
by Pilot Rock the previous
week, he knew the team had
some things to work on and
was glad to see the work
pay off. “We filled the lanes
properly and penetrated they
key. It was nice to see the
kids come back and react
defensively.” He was also
pleased that 21 o f the teams
40 rebounds came on the of
fensive end o f the court.
The C ards looked
momentarily jittery to start
the contest against Stanfield
on December 29 but quickly
calm ed and got to work.
Trailing 1-7, lone scored

17 unansw ered points to
take the lead 18-7 after
one quarter. Stanfield put
together a 9-4 run to pull
within five, 22-17, midway
through the second quarter
but the Cards responded to
stretch the lead back out to
nine at the half, 27-18. It
was a strong 22 point third
quarter by lone that put the
game out o f reach however.
Paul Hams scored ten in the
period including two three
pointers and seven Cardinals
put points on the board as
the Cards kept up their first
half offensive intensity. The
Cardinals took advantage of
a Stanfield team that looked
worn out in the second half
to coast home with the 62-38
win.
Clay Morter had his
second double-double of the
weekend, tallying 11 points
and 15 rebounds and threw
in a team-leading five steals.
Paul Hams led all scorers
with 19 points plus added
five assists. Alan Rietmann
was also in double figures
with 11 points.
Coach Dennis Ste
fani was pleased to see the
team working together so
well for the win. “They
are really starting to click
and getting confidence with
each other.” The team had
19 turnovers in the game
but many came in the shaky
early going. With only six
turnovers in the second half,
Stefani noted that the team
was moving the ball well
and really getting the fast
break moving. “It was an
other good win for us. This
gives us some confidence
going into league.”
The Cardinals return
to league play with a tough
schedule including Condon/
Wheeler at home on Friday
and Cascade Locks on the
road on Saturday.
