The lone Cardinals
came from behind in con
vincing fashion to take a
57-43 win over Dufur on the
road Saturday, December
15. Turning up the hustle a
notch or two and concentrat
ing on defense in the second
half, the Cards shut down
the hot-shooting the Rang
ers exhibited in the first half
to grab the win in their first
league contest o f the year.
Trailing 22-30 at the
half, the Cards returned to
the court and put up seven
unanswered points, includ
ing a three-pointer and a put-
back from Kevin Fowler, to
close the gap to one. And
while the Cardinals m an
aged to tie the game twice
in the third quarter, they
co uldn’t w restle the lead
aw ay from the R angers.
At the end o f the quarter,
the Cards trailed by three,
35-38.
T h e m o m e n tu m
shifted lone’s direction in a
big way in the fourth quarter.
Early on, Matt Hams canned
a long two pointer and his
brother, Paul, hit a free
throw to tie the score at 38.
Then Matt Hams got away
on a fast break, followed
shortly by Alan Rietmann
stealing the ball and mak
ing a lay-up. Paul Hams hit
a jumper and Justin Archer
hit a free throw to squeak out
a 45-38 lead. With over five
minutes gone in the quarter,
Dufur finally put a point on
the board, hitting the second
o f two free throws but the
lead o f 47-39 didn’t feel all
that secure. Alan Rietmann
then cam e up big, steal
ing an inbounds pass, and
getting fouled on the shot.
With both the bucket and the
free throw good, the Cards
had a little breathing room.
The Rangers were forced
to foul, giving the Cards 11
attempts from the free throw
line in the last two minutes.
When the dust settled, lone
outscored Dufur 22-5 in the
final frame to take the win.
Paul Hams led the
Cards in scoring with 17
points, nine o f those coming
in the fourth quarter. Kevin
Fowler and Alan Rietmann
each added nine and Kip
K rebs had eig h t. Kevin
Fow ler also had a good
night on the boards, leading
the team with 10 rebounds.
Clay Morter tallied six steals
while Paul Hams and Alan
Rietmann each had three
assists to pace the team.
“The kids played a
terrific second half o f de
fense,” said Coach Dennis
Stefani. "Holding Dufur to
13 second half points was a
total team effort. This was
a good come-from-behind
win.”
The Cardinals face
a busy week before Christ
