Mustangs hold off Honkers 8-6 to advance to championship
By Rick Paullus
A fter three score
less quarters, the Heppner
Mustangs finally got into the
endzone and got a big two
point conv ersion. They then
held on to beat the Lakeview
Honkers 8-6 on Saturday,
November 24, in the semi
finals o f the U S. Bank/Les
Schwab Tires OSAA Class
2A state football play-offs.
The Mustangs, 10-2 on the
year, will go for the state
championship on Saturday,
December 1, at Hillsboro
Stadium against the Culver
B ulldogs, who beat Lost
River 27-13, at 2:15 p.m.
The Mustangs will
be the second game o f a
triple-header as Imbler and
Mohawk will play for the 1A
championship at 11 a.m. and
Vale and Gold Beach will
play for the 3A champion
ship at 5:30 p.m.
The M ustangs de
fense held the Honkers on
their first possession forcing
a punt which was downed
at the 13 yard line. Lane
Bailey went for 11 yards
and a first dow n but the
Honkers picked off a deep
pass at the 49 yard line. The
defense held again, forcing
a punt which was downed
at the three yard line, pin
ning the Mustangs deep in
their own territory. Bailey
ran three straight times for
10 yards and a first down.
But the drive stalled and the
Honkers got the ball back at
their 33 after a 46 yard punt
by Bailey.
The d efen se held
again and the M ustangs
took over at their 23 after a
punt and put together their
best drive o f the game so
far as Bailey ran twice for
12 yards and first down. He
then broke free for 17 yards
and another first down at the
Lakeview 49 yard line early
in the second quarter. But a
fumble was recovered by the
Honkers at their 44 yard line
to end the drive. The defense
stepped up again, helped by
a Sam King sack, and the
Mustangs took over at the
Lakeview 43 after a short
punt and a 15 yard return
by Bryan Holland. Spencer
Palm er ran for six yards
and Brent Eckman went for
11 yards and first down at
the 26 yard line. Bailey ran
for two, Palmer picked up
six, and after an incomplete
pass, Bailey picked up four
yards on fourth down for a
first down at the 14. Bailey
went for three, Eckman for
three more, and then Bailey
went for six more and a
first down at the two. The
Mustangs first half misfor
tunes continued though as a
fumble was recovered by the
Honkers at the three.
The Honkers drove
out to midfield before the
Mustangs defense stiffened,
forcing a punt and they took
over at their 21 yard line late
in the first half. Bailey went
for four, Eckman for seven
and a first down, and Bailey
picked up eight more. Eck
man then broke free for 19
yards and another first down
but the half ended before the
Mustangs could run another
play.
Holland took the sec
ond half kick-off 22 yards to
the 42 to give the Mustangs
good field position to open
the third quarter. B ailey
broke free for 18 yards then
ran five straight times for
25 yards and a first down at
the Lakeview 15 yard line.
The Mustangs bogged down
though, coming up inches

short on fourth down and
the Honkers took over deep
in their own territory.
The defense stepped
up again as Taylor Hodges
shot through and made a
tackle for a six yard loss on
third down and the M us
tangs took over at their 36
yard line after the punt.
Bailey ran three times for
15 yards and then hit Hol
land for a seven yard gain.
A personal foul facemask
penalty took the ball to the
Lakeview 27 yard line. After
an illegal motion penalty,
Bailey ran for seven and
another facemask penalty
tacked on another five yards
as the third quarter came to
an end.
Palmer went for five
and a first down at the 15
but a hold penalty brought
the ball back to the 26 yard
line. Holland went for eight
and then Eckman took a
hand-off to the right, pulled
up and hit a wide open King
in the endzone and the Mus
tangs finally broke the ice.

Bailey pulled his way across
the line for the important
tw o point conversion to
make it 8-0 w ith 10:12 left
in the game.
The Honkers came
right back, though, scor
ing on a 25 yard pass from
K asey C lem ons to C ole
Damuth. They failed to tie
it though as Nacho Elgueza-
bal knocked down the two
point conversion pass and
the Mustangs clung to an
8-6 lead with 6:47 left in
the game.
The Mustangs took
over on their 33 after the
kick-off and went to work
as Eckman ran for 10 yards
and a first down. But a loss
and a motion penalty forced
them to punt and the Honk
ers took over at their 23 w ith
3:30 left. The M ustangs
thought they had them held
but the Honkers converted
on a fourth and 12, getting
a first down at the Heppner
47 yard line.
The M ustangs got
their big break though as
King picked up a fumble and
took it all the way inside the
10 before getting run down.
But a block in the back
brought the ball back to the
Lakev iew 32 yard line. After
the Honkers called two time
outs, the M ustangs were
able to run out the clock
and set off their celebration.
The defense was led by King
w ith seven total tackles, in
cluding a sack and a tackle
for a loss. Elguezabal had
five unassisted tackles, one
sack, and two tackles for a
loss. Dalton Wellman had
six tackles, Dennis Kenny
and Andre Rauch had five
each, and Bailey and Van-
Doom had three each.
