Homecoming activities in full swing at HHS O utdoor Club holds first outing
Homecoming week
was kicked off bright and
early Friday morning, Octo
ber 5, with class hall decorat
ing. The walls are covered in
school spirit and the ceilings
with school pride, as each
class decorated with as much
creativity they could muster,
with the theme o f defeating
the Irrigon Knights in mind.
In the end though, the under
dog freshman pulled out the
victory winning “ Best Class
Hall” . Each hall displayed
enorm ous shows o f HHS
spirit, and w ith the decorat
ing the friendly competition
between classes started.
M onday consisted
o f a “bouncing beat” with a
hip hop dress up theme, and
kids used MTV and BET as
inspiration for their dress
ing up, and Monday’s class
competition was a tricycle
race.
C om ing up to the
Mustang palace on Tuesday
might have felt like being
thrown into a Star Trek epi
sode with the dress up theme
as Sci-Fi, aliens and Harry
Winners of Monday’s dress up day at Heppner High School are
as follows: boys - Mr. Morgan, and girls - Megan Orr and Kylie
Doherty.
Potters alike. T uesday’s
pep assembly involved those
kids with a sweet tooth, as
the competition is a candy
toss, as students will test
their basketball skills while
they shoot marshmallows at
one another.
A classic rivalry was
the inspiration for Wednes
d ay ’s dress up them e, as
th e s tu d e n ts d is g u is e d
themselves all as Cops and
Robbers. Wednesday night

2007 Juvenile Diabetes Re
search Foundation (JDRF)
Walk to C ure D iabetes.
Walking as members of the
team, Beth's Buddies, the
group raised approximately
$3,000 for diabetes research
and had a great time in spite
o f the rain.
The six car c a ra
van departed lone at 6:45,
hoping that the Portland
weatherman was wrong in
his prediction o f rain. Ar
riving at the walk site, his
toric Oaks Park in Southeast
Portland, they were only
m om entarily discouraged
to find that the weatherman
unfortunately called it right.
With seldom used umbrellas
and outerwear designed for
Eastern Oregon “rain” the
group set off on the walk
with great enthusiasm. This
non-competitive walk was
one of many held around the
country for this cause and
featured a number o f family
and corporate teams. Over
4,000 people participated in
the Portland Walk.
Upon co m p letin g
the 3.1 mile route, the rest of
the day included a BBQ and
unlimited rides at Oaks Park
Amusement Park. B eth’s
Buddies quickly determined
that the best part of the rainy
day was no lines for the
rides. In fact, with no lines
waiting, the ride attendants
let willing riders stay on
even the m ost stom ach-
churning rides two and three
times in a row. At 3:00, the
adults finally said no to the
“just one more ride” plea
and loaded the wet, cold and
dizzy crew up for the trip
home. A stop at Spooky’s in
The Dalles for pizza revived
the group who arrived home
w ith plenty o f time to finish
their weekend homework.
Beth's Buddies is a
team formed to support Beth
Morter, a Type 1 (insulin
dependent) diabetic since
2004. Not only did team
members collect donations
and pledges for the event,
hut many helped w ith a
spaghetti feed earlier in Sep
tember where the proceeds
benefited JDRF. JDRF is a
leading research organiza
tion in the effort to find a
cure for Type I diabetes.
G reat strid es have been
made in diabetes treatments
in the past decade or two but
a cure remains elusive.
Beth’s Buddies are
still collecting donations for
JDRF until November 1. For
more information, contact
Anne Morter at 422-7429.
