Fire concerns
Letter to the editor:
I'm not a writer, but I'v e counted to 10 several
times and feel 1 have to speak my mind.
First I want to say Thank You to all the firefighters
that came to Monument to help put out The Monument
Complex fire, you all did a great job.
What I would like to correct is that the fire did
not start Friday the 13th, it started about 9 p.m. Thursday
the 12th. There was a call made informing you that there
was a fire.
t.
I'm wondering where Madison Lookout was and
why he didn’ t have this turned in, as he was less than 10
miles from where the fire started. I worked seven years
on Lookouts. When a storm was coming I was to stay
in tower and mark any down strikes on the windows so
when morning came you checked those areas for smoke.
Well, Friday morning we could see quite a bit o f smoke,
so why the hell did we burn 54,000 acres? This is the third
fire that has burned us out in five years and they were all
uncalled for.
Years ago, in 1940 to 1960, we had fires and when
someone saw smoke they grabbed their gunny sacks and
shovels, everyone fought the fire and they put them out.
The ladies fixed lunches and meals and it didn’t cost what
it cost to put the fires out today.
Common sense tells me that this is because o f poor
management o f the Umatilla B.L.M and O.D.F. We have
talked to B.L.M. for sometime they need cattle on the J.V.
Ranch. It’s nothing but a fire trap to all o f us in the Top
and Wall Creek areas. The Umatilla is the same, they have
taken most o f the cattle o f f so all we have is fuel.
The other thing that O.D.F. and Umatilla do is they
get to a fire and sit, talk, and write instead o f getting the
fire out first. I know this has happened several times n and
let the fire blow up.
We all pay too much taxes for what we get out o f
it, plus all the acres o f timber, grass and fences it bums
out on all o f us.
So I'd like to know why that we could put fires
out with gunny sacks and shovels and you can’t with the
manpower that's been trained and equipment.
There's something really wrong with this picture.
Common sense tells me that reading it out o f book and
training doesn't do it.
I know there are a lot o f people that feel like we
do. So maybe we all need to get together and see if there
is something we can all do.

Teresa Ann
Lewis Vaughan
Teresa Ann Lew is
Vaughan began her next
great journey on Sunday,
August 5, 2007, surrounded
by family and friends.
She was born July
2, 1955 in Ontario to Keith
and Fern Lewis. She lived
in Ontario until the sum
mer o f her 17th year when
her father’s promotion with
the O regon State P o lic e
moved the family to Baker
City. Teresa always had a
great love for animals. She
learned to ride horses at a
young age and became a
skilled horseman and rodeo
competitor. Her specialty
was barrel racing. She even
tually went on to be crowned
Miss Oregon High School
Rodeo Queen and competed
in National Finals in cow'
cutting and barrel racing
in Utah and Colorado. She
continued as a member o f
the Blue Mountain Rodeo
Team while attending Blue
Mountain Community C ol
lege.
She en joyed hard
work. She worked for A l
bertson’s Bakery while at
tending college. After col
lege she w orked for the
G rizzly Bear Commissary
before finding her life long
career, 30 plus years, as a
legal assistant at the law
firm o f Banta, Silven, and
Young. In 1980 Teresa met
a young lawyer, a gentle
giant o f a man who stole
her heart and became the
love o f her life. Despite the
daunting prospect ofjoining
the Vaughan clan, includ
ing Floyd, Kathy and their
ten children, Teresa threw
caution to the w ind and ac
cepted Charlie’s proposal.
They were married Septem

Teresa had many in
terests and talents. She was
a great organizer o f closets,
shopping trips, weekend
get-a-w ays, fam ily vaca
tions and fabulous dinners
- be it elegant special oc
casions or feeding hungry
coaches and players. She
enjoyed gourmet cooking
and had an innate sense
o f design and style. There
were never enough flowers
to plant or recipes to try.
She combined her natural
talent for color and design
and her love o f meeting new
people with the experience
o f her mother Fern Taylor
in join tly establishing the
successful business known
as Cover Works.
Teresa was a posi
tive person who remained
open to new ideas, respected
ideas and opinions different
than her own, and taught this
to her husband and children.
She convinced her skeptical
fam ily to experience new
places and different people
- both with activities outside
their daily com fort zones
and on trips far outside their
usual time zones. Her fam
ily will always be eternally
grateful for her determina
tion to not only get herself
but also her family to Paris,
France, Graz, Austria, and
all across Italy.
Teresa truly believed
that wealth is not measured
by what you have but rather
by who you have beside you.
In her case, it was count
less friends, her children’s
friends, clients, customers,
faithful pets (M ickey, Gus,
Sophie and Pete, to name a
few), and her entire loving
family.
