Does habitat matter?
To the Editor:
Integrated forest management strategies look at
the health o f the forest w ithin the adaptive management
context. Plans call for the development o f a variety of
stand structures across the landscape. This will, in turn,
benefit local and regional economies with the opportuni-
ties for forest recreation (such as hunting, berry picking,
wildlife viewing, hiking, etc.) as well as aid in fire protec
tion and forest health. Plans also have strategies for prop
erly functioning aquatic and riparian habitats, which will
benefit the recreational and commercial fisheries. When
environmental groups’ law suits put forest lands off limits
to management, habitat can not be created or maintained.
Is this what we want?
