ALL NEWS AND ADVERTISEMENT DEADLINE: MONDAYS AT 5:00 P.M. « The Morrow County School District Board, at their Monday night meeting at the d istric t o ffice in Lexington, heard a report c o n cern in g the fire restoration project for Sam B oardm an E lem entary, following the school's library fire on May 21. MCSD S u p e rin ten d e n t M ark Burrows told the board that damages from the fire will exceed $3 million and clean up and repairs are estimated to take around 80 days. The fire, w hich started around 4 a.m. May 21, caused damage to the lib rary , a work room , classro o m s, as w ell as structural dam age to the building from the heat. Due to the extent of the damage district officials closed SBE 10 days early. The majority of work is expected to be completed in time for school to open as scheduled. The fire, believed to have been started by a heating unit near the library and work room, burned hot and got up into the building's attic, according to MCSD officials, forcing fire fighters from B oardm an and Hermiston to cut a hole in the school’s roof to fight the flam es and release the smoke, said district officials. The damage to the school was “significant,” with around 20 percent of the school damaged by fire and more than 50 percent dam aged by w ater and smoke. A fire restoration crew is already in the process of repairing the damage. In som e cases, how ever, co n ten t item s w ill be replaced if it is determined that it would not be cost efficient to clean or repair them. Burrows said that Brett Cook, building official for the city of Boardman and the M orrow C ounty Planning Department, has been “wonderful" to work with as he determines what is required to meet code d u ring rep airs and restoration. Also at the meeting Dan Daltoso was sworn in as board member. Daltoso \\ was elected in the recent school board election to replace Ken Matlack, who declined to run for another term .
