Seven o f eight li
censed businesses in Gilliam
and M orrow counties re
fused to sell alcohol to a mi
nor during a recent compli
ance operation conducted by
the Oregon Liquor Control
Commission.
These liquor busi
nesses said no to the minor:
Boardman - Boardman Li
quor Store and La Serenata
Family Mexican Restaurant;
Condon - Condon Liquor
Store and Murray's Condon
Pharmacy; Heppner - Hep
pner Family Foods and The
Country Rose; and Irrigon -
Huwe’s Has It All.
One business in Gil
liam County sold to the mi
nor. Store clerks who pro
vide alcohol to the minor are
cited into court and face at
least a $350 administrative
fine. Waiters, servers, bar
tenders and other OLCC ser
vice permittees face a $300
ad m in istrativ e fine. And
business owners - licensees
- will be fined up to $ 1,600
for a first violation, even if
the sale is made by an em
ployee.
An OLCC inspector
and two minor volunteers
did the compliance testing
May 26 as part of the OL-
CC's priority effort to fight
underage drinking.
In a compliance test,
the underage volunteer at
tempts to buy alcohol from
licensees or their employees
to determine if they are prop
erly checking identification
and obeying state law pro
hibiting alcohol sales to any
one under 21. The minors
are supervised by OLCC in
spectors or other law offic
ers, carry their own legal ID
and are advised not to dis
guise their age or encourage
the sale of alcohol.
The O LCC tested
about 1,600 licensed liquor
businesses in 2006, and a
number of police agencies
also do compliance checks.
The O LCC offers
training to store clerks, ser
vice permit holders and oth
ers on ID checking, identi
fying false identification and
laws regarding minors and
alcohol.
