The five students were selected out o f 11 applicants on the basis o f a c a d e m ic a c h i e v e m e n t , c h o s e n f ie ld o f study, f in a n c ia l n e e d , s c h o o l p a r tic ip a tio n , d e g r e e o f effort the student has made in s e e k in g s o u r c e s for c o l l e g e , and p erson al characteristics for success and school citizenship. K ayla Teague- LaRue is the Daughter o f Robin and M elissa LaRue from lone. She is planning on a tte n d in g O r e g o n State U n iv e r sity in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Kayla is very active in schcx>l w ith va r sity letters in volleyball, basketball, and track all four years o f high school. She served as class p r e s id e n t, c la s s rep resentative, and A S B S e c , Treas. K ayla has p a r tic ip a te d in m any c o m m u n it y a c t iv it ie s , serving as 4H Counselor, directed youth track meet, volunteered as lifeguard, fed homeless on Burnside and worked on the elementary s c h o o l c a r n iv a l for tw o years. She has received the national honor roll award for three years, big sky scholar athlete for three years and has been on the lone High School Honor roll for all four years of High School. Regina Seitz attends Heppner High School and will be attending college to get her bachelors degree, majoring in political science or communication, putting her on track for law school. Regina is the daughter of Wayne and Lori Seitz from Heppner. Regina has been on the honor roll for three years, with a 4 point GPA in 2005 and 2006. She is a member of Stars, FBLA. Knowledge Master Open. Outdoor Club, International Club, Drama C lub, te a c h e r’s aid, 4-H am bassador, and on the parent n e w sletter staff. Regina volunteers in the com m unity w orking on C ycle O regon, youth basketball and volleyball m entor, a ssisted living in te ra ctio n and B ooster Club. She has been very involved in sports, with three varsity letters in basketball, tw o v arsity letters in volleyball and four varsity letters in softball. Sarah Price o f Heppner is the daughter of Keith and Deana Price. She is c o n sid e rin g C orban College and George Fox University. She is planning on enterin g the field o f fin a n c ia l n e w s The Morrow County Health District board heard some good financial news at its monthly meeting Monday night in Heppner. The district had another profitable month pulling in $83,366 in net revenue on gross revenue of $516,084. The district has been averaging over $23,000 a month in profit over the past 10 months of its fiscal year. “All in all we are having a pretty good year,” board chair Larry Mills told the board. In other business the board heard that doctor recruiting is showing some results with one doctor verbally committing to come to Heppner, and another in the negotiating process. The district is paying a recruiting firm $12,000 to help find doctors to come to the community. It was also announced that the district would be taking delivery on a new ambulance in July. Summer fun at daycare This summer Heppner Daycare and Preschool will be offering many fun activities. The center will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. beginning Monday, June 11. Special Colt Club activities will be offered from 9 a.m. until noon for $8 per day w ith a multifamily discount of $6 per day for each additional child. They will also be going to the sw imming pool in the afternoons. This will be offered at the regular daycare rate plus the cost of swimming. Plans to clo se Oregon Highway 19 at the John Day River (Kimberly) Bridge are on schedule for June 2 through June 21. The b rid g e is lo cated ap p ro x im ately one m ile south of Kimberly along the w estern border o f G rant C ounty. The c lo su re is needed to accom m odate brid g e re p a ir w ork that began last month. Detour signs will be posted directing travelers to use alternate routes during the 19-day highway and bridge closure. O D O T w ill m ain tain p e d e stria n -o n ly access across the structure during the closure time. Two m ain d eto u r routes are being identified around the Kimberly Bridge closure. Eastbound traffic from K im berly w ill be detoured east on Oregon H ighw ay 402 to Long Creek, then south on U.S. Highway 395 to Mt. Vernon. W estbound tra ffic from Kimberly will be detoured west on Oregon Highway 19 to Service Creek, then south on Oregon Highway 207 to M itchell. The South Morrow County Scholarship Trust was established several years ago with the mission to grow fu n d s to pro v id e scholarships to graduating senior from Heppner and lone High schools and to eventually take the place of the Troedson Scholarship fund, w hich w ill be discontinued in the year 2023. The K im berly Bridge repair work is part of a $5.75 m illio n O regon D ep artm en t of Transportation project that includes the replacement of the John Day R iver (Monument) Bridge located along Oregon Highway 402 in Monument. Other than during the Kimberly Bridge closure next month, travelers can expect single lane travel with minor delays at both sites throughout the summer. W ork on the K im berly Bridge will be completed by the end o f the year. C o n stru ctio n at the Monument Bridge site will continue over the next two y ears, w ith c o m p letio n scheduled for the end of 2009. Both structures were built in the 1930s and are in need of immediate attention. Rice will have office hours in both the lone and H eppner branches o f the bank. Rice is a native Montanan and a graduate of Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, with a degree in A gricultural B usiness Management. He joins the bank from Valley Bank in Glasgow, MT, where he was on the lending staff. Nelson graduates from Willamette University College of Law Ju stin W. N elson graduated from Willamette University College of Law on Sunday, May 13, 2007. He graduated Cum Laude, and graduated in the top 10% of the class. While at Willamette he was a m em ber o f the Willamette Law Review, a senior writer for Willamette Law O n lin e, and was a teaching assistant for Legal R esearch and W riting Course. During the summer a fte r his first year, he interned for Kuhn & Spicer, A tto rn ey s at Law, in H eppner and H erm iston. During the summer after his second year, he interned for Corey, Byler, Rew, Lorenzen & H ojem , L .L .P., in Pendleton. N elson g rad u ate from Heppner High School Justin Nelson in 2000. He is the son of Chuck and Lisa Nelson of Lexington. He was bom and raised on a wheat farm in Lexington. Nelson is currently studying for the Oregon Bar Exam, which will be held on July 23 and 24. After taking the bar exam, he plans on returning to the Morrow and Umatilla County area to live and seek employment.
