Mustang JVs sweep Hermiston Frosh lone Middle School Track team

Approximately 153
fifth grade students from
Boardm an, Irrigon, lone,
and Heppner attended the
annual Willow Creek Water­
shed Field Day. The event
was held on W ednesday,
May 2, at Duane Neiffer’s
property west of Lexington.
They celebrated 10 years
with a rib and hamburger
barbeque for the presenters
and helpers. The students
were rained on most of the
morning but they were giv­
en a reprieve with the after­
noon sun.
Water was the focus
of the presentations during
the daylong education pro­
gram. The day was broken
into hands-on teaching ses­
sions including: soils, weath­
er, plants, compass and GPS/
m apping, m acro inverte­
brates, w ater quality and
stream bank restoration. The
students planted tress to sta­
bilize stream banks.

presenters and helpers were:
Sean Murray, Kendra Ray­
burn. Eddie Ramirez, Sheri-
lyn Peck, Jake Van Doom,
Keisie Fox, Jessica Hughes,

Sanchez, Heather Wiggers,
and Taylor Disque.
The continued suc­
cess of this field day is due
to the support from many
agencies, teachers, students,
parents and schools. Craig

Fishing derby to be held at
Cutsforth Park
Oregon Department
of Fish and Wildlife along
with Morrow County Parks
are sponsoring a fishing der­
by on Saturday, May 12, at
Cutsforth Park fishing pond
from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.
The fishing derby is free and
will be open for children up
to 14 years of age. The Elks
Lodge #358 of Heppner will
provide lunch.
Cutsforth Park is lo­
cated 22 miles southeast of
Heppner on the Blue Moun­
tain Scenic By-Way.
Oregon Department
of Fish and Wildlife Depart-
ment will have bait and tack­
le for this event. Donor fish­
ing rods will also be avail­
able for kids that need them.
Tim Bailey of ODFW. Uma­
tilla District fish biologist
and the M orrow C ounty
Parks Board is sponsoring
the event. The goal of this
event is to encourage the in­
terest of kids in the sport of
fishing.

lunch menu
HHS class of ’57
reunion planned
Willow Creek Bap­
tist Church members will be
serving lunch on Wednesday,
May 16. The menu will con­
sist of scrambled eggs with
ham and sausage, biscuits
and gravy, mixed melons,
cinnam on rolls, and fruit
juice.
The Heppner High
School class of 1957 will be
celebrating their 50th class
reunion in the city park on
July 21, 2007. Everyone is
invited to stop by and renew
old acquaintances and renew
memories.

Frosh on Friday, May 4, by
scores of 13-4 and 12-4 in
Hermiston. The Mustangs,
now 12-0 on the year, will
wrap up their season with a
d o u b le h e a d e r at hom e
against Condon-Wheeler on
Friday, May 11, beginning at
3 p.m.
The

scored two runs in the first
when, with two outs, Justin
Archer, Sam King and Jared
H uddleston w alked with
Archer scoring on a passed
ball and King scoring on a
throw down to second. The
Bulldogs scored a run in the
b ottom h a lf but the
Mustangs answered in the
second with five runs with
two out. Keenan Jack and
C h ris L ien w alked and
scored on a Wacy Coil triple;
Archer walked; Coil scored
when King reached on an
error; Huddleston reached
on an error to score Archer;
and Sean Murray had an RBI
single.
The Bulldogs scored
a run in the bottom half but
the M u stan g s an sw ered
when, again with two outs,
Lien was hit by a pitch and
came all the way around to
score on a Coil double. They
added another run in the
fourth when King reached on
an error and later scored
when Mark McCabe reached
on a fielder’s choice. In the
fifth. Coil singled with two
out and cam e hom e as
Archer tripled and he scored
on a King triple.
The Bulldogs got to
w ith in
11-4 but the
Mustangs got a couple of
insurance runs in the seventh
when. K ing b lasted a
homefun over the left field
fence and Huddleston and
Murray singled and McCabe
had an RBI single.
H u d d lesto n went
five innings striking out six
and allow ing two earned
runs w ith Josh Shank
pitching the final two innings
strik in g out th ree and
allowing one run.
Coil went 3-5 with
three RBIs and scored twice;
King went 2-4 scoring four
runs and driving in two;
McCabe went 2-5 with two
RBIs; M urray went 2-5;
Archer scored three runs;
and Lien scored two.

letes have been busy with
track this spring. Coached by
Dean Robinson and his as­
sistants Karl Blaeuer and
Paula Emmel, they’ve com­
peted in five track meets so
far and will conclude the sea­
son with the championship
meet this Friday, May 11 in
Stanfield. That meet will get
underway at noon.
At the Sunridge Middle
School Track Meet held re­
cently in Pendleton. lone did
very well against a large field
of schools including: Pendle­
ton. U m atilla, H eppner,
Stanfield,
Riverside, Irrigon, He­
lix, Pilot Rock. Echo, and
Weston. They took home
first place in seven events.
