TWELVE - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner. Oregon Wednesday, May 9,2007 Volunteers needed at Boardman Grasslands The Nature Conservancy invites those interested in protecting the ecology of Boardman Grasslands to participate in a volunteer work party May 19-20. This preserve is located in the gently rolling hills south of the Columbia River near Boardman. Sandy flood-deposit and loamy lakebed soils host excellent examples of globally rare Columbia Basin habitat types: four native bunchgrass communities; four sagebrush-steppe communities; and one bitterbrush com m unity. The C onservation Area and adjoining military lands harbor Oregon's largest viable population of the Washington ground squirrel, listed in Oregon as an endangered species. The grassland and shrub- steppe habitats also host a suite of sensitive bird species, such as ferruginous hawk, loggerhead shrike, sage sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, long-billed curlew, and burrowing owl, as well as a diversity of other wildlife. Volunteers will meet in lone at 9:30 a.m. to remove non-native knapweed. Participants should bring a lunch, water, and appropriate clothing, including work gloves and sturdy hiking shoes. Morrow County area host families needed -Continued from page11 set forth in ’C S IE T ’s Standards for International E d u catio n al T ravel Pn grams. D oty en co u rag es fam ilies to c o n tact the program immediately, as it will allow the proper time for the students and hosts to get to know one another before they actually meet for the first time. M orrow C ounty area families interested in learning more about student exchange or arranging for a meeting with a community re p re se n ta tiv e may call P.I.E., toll-free, at 1-866- 546-1402. The agency also has travel/study program opportunities available for A m erican high school students as well as possibilities for community volunteers to assist and work with area host fam ilies, students and schools. Salvage logging will close portion of M urderers Creek Unit Salvage logging on the Malheur National Forest will close Aldrich Lookout Road (Forest Service Road 2150) and surrounding areas beginning this fall, limiting hunter access to A ldrich Mountain on the northwest side of the po p u lar M urderers Creek Wildlife Management Unit. The closure is due to the Thorn S alvage Fire Recovery Project and runs from Oct. 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. It directly affects 7,800 acres of the 735,762- acre Murderers Creek unit and includes portions of the M urderers C reek-Flagtail Travel Management Area. For public safety during harvest operations. National Forest lands within the salvage area w ill be closed to all public entry, including foot travel. In addition. F orest Service Roads 2140, 2150, 2170 and associated roads will be closed to all vehicles to reduce safety co n cern s associated with logging and log haul. “T hough salv ag e logging will occur on only a sm all po rtio n o f the Murderers Creek Unit, the road closures will restrict access to a larger portion that happens to be popular with hunters,” said ODFW D istric t B io lo g ist Ryan Torland. “Hunters need to be aware of the closure of both roads and forestland in the Aldrich Mountain area this season and plan their hunting trips accordingly.” H unters may still walk in to hunt in areas outside the salvage project perimeter. Maps showing the area and road closures are available at all M alheur National Forest offices and can also be found at http:// www.fs.fed.us/r6/malheur/ (see Shake Table Fire C om plex R oad C losure Map). The controlled hunts in Murderers Creek affected by the closure are: 246X Murderer Cr U n it-O n e bull elk 246A W Murderers C r-O n e elk 246C Flagtail - One anterlesselk 146 M u rd erer Cr Unit - One buck deer Hunters that selected one of the above hunts as their first choice and now w ish to change th eir selection should contact ODFW's Licensing Division at (503) 947-6100 no later than June 1. Bighorn sheep and antelope hunts will not be affected by the closure. The Thorn Salvage Fire Recovery Project is expected to salvage trees killed in the Shake Table Complex Fire, which burned in August 2006. The current proposal could salvage dead and dying trees on up to 3,900 acres and rem ove potential hazard trees along as many as 43.4 miles of open roads.
