Volunteers needed at
Boardman Grasslands
The Nature Conservancy invites those interested
in protecting the ecology of Boardman Grasslands to
participate in a volunteer work party May 19-20. This
preserve is located in the gently rolling hills south of the
Columbia River near Boardman. Sandy flood-deposit and
loamy lakebed soils host excellent examples of globally
rare Columbia Basin habitat types: four native bunchgrass
communities; four sagebrush-steppe communities; and one
bitterbrush com m unity. The C onservation Area and
adjoining military lands harbor Oregon's largest viable
population of the Washington ground squirrel, listed in
Oregon as an endangered species. The grassland and shrub-
steppe habitats also host a suite of sensitive bird species,
such as ferruginous hawk, loggerhead shrike, sage sparrow,
grasshopper sparrow, long-billed curlew, and burrowing
owl, as well as a diversity of other wildlife. Volunteers will
meet in lone at 9:30 a.m. to remove non-native knapweed.
Participants should bring a lunch, water, and appropriate
clothing, including work gloves and sturdy hiking shoes.
