Beginning Monday and going on through Friday, elementary school students will learn first-hand about the environment that sur rounds them, straight from the experts. Students will travel to one of three loca tions - M cKay Creek in Pendleton. Willow Creek in Lexington, or the Umatilla River (Oxbow site) in Her miston - and learn from me teorologists, hydrologists, soil/water conservationists, fish and wildlife department officials and more. Each lo cation provides a perfect stream setting for this learn ing environment. This is the l()th year of Watershed Field Days, w hich staff from the UMESD plan and coordi nate each year. A special lunch each day will mark the celebration of a decade of the event. The event has been coordinated for the past several years by Craig Sat- ter, a community and busi ness liaison for the UMESD. Students will get the chance to use various tools of the trade, look at soil sam ples and bugs, and learn how m apping is c o n d u cte d , among other fun activities. Teachers for the Wil low Creek location include Dennis Hull for weather sta tion, Clint Carlson for plant identification. Larry Lutch- er for soils development and formation, Gary Hunt and lone students for macro-in verteb rate sam pling and identification, Deiter Waite for water quality monitoring and testing, Duane Neiffer for mapping: math in natu ral resources-compass, and Bill Ewing for stream bank rehabilitation and restora tion. The Willow Creek Country Club Ladies Play Day was held Tuesday, April 24. Results were as follows: Low gross of the field was Lynnea Sargent (41); low net o f the field was Lorrene M ontgom ery (29); least p u tts o f the field was Suzanne Jepsen (15); flight A low g ro ss was a tie between Jan Paustian and Pat Edmundson; flight C low gross was Pat Dougherty (52); flight A low net was Karen Thompson; flight C low net was Bernice Lott (41); and flight C least putts was a tie between Barbara Gilbert and Joanne Barbee (20). Flight A long drive on #1 was Pat Edm undson. Flight C long drive was Bev Steagall. In other events Outstanding Putting with 11 was Lynnea Sargent.all. A total of 11 players attended. May tee-off time is 9 a.m. Sheriff's Report -M C SO deputy ad v ised he was w ith a disabled vehicle in lrrigon. It was d eterm in ed the vehicle was not disabled, the driver stopped to reading directions. -M C SO deputy advised there was a flare-up w ith y e ste rd a y ’s fire in lrrigon. The fire was going to move into areas not yet burned. The lrrigon Fire Dept, advised to go ahead and let it burn as the Fish and Wildlife Dept, wants that area to burn off (in the lrrigon Refuge area). The lrrigon Fire Dept, captain checked the area and it was okay. -MCSO. Boardman Police D ept, received a rep o rt from a c a lle r in Boardm an that som eone was trying to come into his house from the front door. The caller was in the kitchen and had a sword. -MCSO. Boardman Police Dept., Boardm an ambulance received a report from a caller in Boardman o f a verbal d isp u te in progress. There was a threat involved with a possible knife or long blade handled clippers. Diana Hernandez. 39, was arre sted for D om estic M enacing and Resisting Arrest. Hernandez was lodged at the Umatilla County Jail. -MCSO received a rep o rt from a c a lle r in lrrig o n o f kids y ellin g , cursing and pushing. By Mahaley Huddleston The senior girls of Heppner High School had a luncheon last Tuesday, April 24, at the O dd fellow s Lodge. The luncheon was sponsored by the Booster Club and put on by two of their members Angie Hanson and Kaedene Bailey. The senior girls and their mothers were invited for lunch in a picturesque spring setting. T here was m usic entertainment while the girls ate, provided by the guitar talents of Luke Basile. Elizabeth Ballard the M orrow C ounty D istrict A tto rn ey was the guest speaker and spoke of woman roles in society today and how woman need to protect and stand up for themselves. The occasion was a delightful mother-daughter bonding experience. HHS track team attends Columbia River Invitational Track Meet On Saturday, April 28, Heppner High School track team attended the 3rd annual Columbia River Invitational Track Meet at Riverside High School. Boys 200 Meter. Casey Maben on right placed second with a time of 24.60 while Tim Hauer on left had a third place finish with a time of 24.70 Amber Patton tied for second place in the Girls High Jump at 4 ’10” .
