celebrates 10 years

ence students to the field day
as station presenters and
lead ers. A bout 70 high
school students from Pilot
Rock High, Pendleton High,
Heppner High, lone High,
Irrigon High and Hermiston
High schools will participate.

with hands-on contextual
learning activities that focus
on a few of the many com
ponents that make up the
study of Watershed systems.
Teachers will use water con
servation kits purchased by
the C onsortium to make
water conservation a part of
each student’s future by ap
plying what was learned at
the field day into daily liv
ing.
Baker City
Degree Day held
April first was not an
“April Fools” day this year.
The S tate D egree Team
traveled to Baker City to
confer all of the degrees. The

m em bers and four other
members took the rest of the
degrees as well.
The team was made

The M orrow Soil
and Water Conservation Dis
trict was part of the concep
tion of the Watershed Field
Days program in 1997. This
year the WFD will be cele
brating 10 years. The local
Willow Creek site is sched
uled on Wednesday, May 2,
from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
at Duane Neiffer’s property
west of Lexington.
The presenters will
be served barbequed ham
burgers this year to celebrate
the 10 year anniversary.
Some of the presenters have
been donating their time for
the field day every year.
The McKay Creek
field day is located south east
of Pendleton and is sched
uled on Monday, April 30
and Tuesday. May 1, the
Umatilla River Site is locat
ed west of Hermiston and
scheduled on Thursday and
Friday, May 3-4.
For the past nine
years, the Watershed Field
Days have created an invalu
able learning experience with
in-the-field, hands-on learn
ing about our most valuable
resource -water. More than
4000 elem entary, m iddle
school and high school stu
dents have participated in the
Field Days over the years.
The Watershed Fifcld
Day exposes students to the
concept o f “ W atershed.”
Within the Watershed con
cept, the learning stations
focus on two themes: Agri
cultural Practices That Ben
efit the Environment, and
Healthy Streams: Evaluation
and Restoration Skills.
Each day the s tu
dents will rotate among sev
en different learning stations
that include: Soil Develop
ment and Formation; Weath
er and Watersheds; Wheat
Plant Identification and Plant

dures; Mapping - GPS and
compass work; M acro-in
vertebrate Sam pling and
Identification; Water Quali
ty Monitoring and Testing;
and Stream Bank Stabiliza
tion and Restoration.
