They say the third out is the toughest out to get
and it was never more true as the visiting LaGrande Tigers
scored seven runs with two outs in the tope o f the seventh
inning to break a 3-3 tie and beat the Heppner Mustang
baseball team on Tuesday, March 20, in a non-league game.
The Mustangs, 0-2 on the young year, will play their final
two non-league games at Colfax on Friday and Saturday,
March 30 and 31.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead after one but the
Mustangs tied it in the second when Nathan Kennedy
walked and ended up scoring on a ground-out by Robbie
Smith. The Mustangs took a 3-1 lead in the third when
Chance Day singled and scored on a triple by Quinn Peck,
Nacho Elguezabal then scored Peck on a groundnut.
The Tigers scored a run in the fourth and tied it

the “Shoneys.” They were all. along with five other teams
that showed up at 1:30 p.m., eager to challenge last year’s
Road Bowling champions from Redmond.
This second year of the bowling activity started as
soon as the thirty participants had read the “guidelines and
rules,” signed on the dotted line, paid their entry fees, and
grabbed their bowls, rugs, and chalk.
Leading off with the oft’ heard warning “Bowling!”
were last year’s winners, Kirk and Lottie Holcomb, and
their four-person team. As they neared the end of Gale
Street, they demonstrated the one hazard on the course by
missing the Willow Creek Bridge and not stopping the bowl
before it landed in the creek. Since “a real Irishman never
loses his bowl,” a team member hastened after a magnetic
metal detector, which was attached to a long handle for
successful retrieval of the bowl.
In the meantime, the other eight teams learned from
the Holcomb’s miscalculation and tossed their ways over
the bridge, around the Union-Street loop, and on down
Riverside to the Canyon-Road intersection. They were not
far ahead of the Holcomb team, time wise, but had added
