It was a little smelly and pretty muddy, hut Erin
Heideman’s elective Ag I class at lone High School had
the unique opportunity to impose on the generosity of a
local rancher and watch heifers being spayed on Thursday
afternoon. “ It was neat g etting to see the new est
management tools that are being utilized just outside our
backdoor,” said Emily Rietmann, junior.
V eterin arian . D aryl M yers, from N ebraska
performed the procedure on over 300 heifers, owned by
Joe McElligott, and stopped mid-way to give an explanation
to the class. Dr. Myers explained that the purpose of the
procedure was to take feedlot heifers and reduce the risk
of owning them by eliminating the hormone produced by
the ovaries and manage them as you would steers in that
setting. This is a management tool designed to improve
the efficiency of pounds per day gained and an advantage
in feed conversion. “ It was very generous of Joe to allow
us the chance to experience this," said science teacher, Erin
Heideman. “I’m grateful for the opportunity."
Students in the Ag I class are getting a crash course
in a variety of subjects including the current unit, animal
science management. Other subjects include food science,
a g ric u ltu ra l law and su sta in a b ility , crop scien ce,
parliamentary procedure and Oregon agriculture.
Anyone interested in offering a field trip opportunity
or being a guest speaker are welcomed anytime.

Wee bit O’lreland Ceili-ifs tradition
A few Irish celebrations ago. people began to
suggest after the KUMA Coffee Hour that more Irish music
was needed during the day. Thus the Ccili or Ceilgh
(pronounced Kalee) was horn and has become a traditional
part of Heppner’s annual St. Pat’s weekend.
On this 25lh celebration, March 17. those so inclined
will return to the Elks from 2 until 4 p.m. to be entertained
by the likes of the Irish Singers. Mulligan Stew, a young
talented step dancer, and the return of last years sax player.
Sax? Maybe not Irish, but if last year is any example, others
may just join in for the best jam session ever heard. One of
Heppner’s leprechauns challenges the crowd to “just try to
keep from stomping your feet, clapping your hands or
singing along.”
