rebounds and two blocked
shots, with McCabe adding
11 points, on five of seven
shooting, and three steals.
Bailey had eight points and
four assists. Farrens had five
a ssists and three steals.
Delveaux had two steals.
After the champion­
ship game, it was announced
that junior Nacho Elgueza­
bal was named to the BMC
first team and senior R.J.
Farrens and ju n io r Lane
Bailey were named honor­
able mention.
Mustang boys rebound to take third seed

dleston three-pointer at the
end wasn’t enough.
Elguezabal hit seven
of eight shots and finished

bounds and two steals with
Farrens adding 13 points,
eight assists, four rebounds
and two steals. Bailey had 10
points, two assists and two
steals, and Huddleston was
also in double figures with
with a three-pointer. Rauch
scored twice on passes from
Bailey and once on a pass
from Farrens. Elguezabal
scored on a pass from Hud­
dleston, but the Tigerscots
came back to tie it at the end
of one at 15-15. The tieing
shot came from about 60 feet
away at the buzzer.
The team s traded
baskets to open the second

The Heppner Mus­
tang boys hit almost 54 per­
cent from the field to beat the
W eston-M cE w en T iger-
scots, 66-54, on Saturday,
Feb. 17, in the Blue Moun­
tain C onference D istrict
tournament to earn the num­
ber-three seed in the Les
Schwab / US Bank OSAA
Class 2A State tournament.
The Mustangs, now 14 and
10 on the year, lost a hard-
fought game on Friday, Feb.
16, to the Pilot Rock Rock­
ets, 68-60, in the first round
as they cut a 22-point deficit
to three points, but couldn't
quite finish the comeback.
By earning the third
seed, the Mustangs will trav­
el to the number-one seed
from the Northwest League,
the Knappa Loggers. The
game will be played Friday
evening, Feb. 23, in Knap­
pa.
Friday’s first quarter
started out well for the Mus­
tangs as Lane Bailey scored
off a Matt McCabe steal,
then hit a jumper. Nacho El-
guezabal hit a short baseline
jum per and McCabe hit a
three-pointer to make it 9-
3. The Rockets came back
to tie it before Elguezabal
scored off a pass from R.J.
Farrens to give the Mustangs
an 11-9 lead after one.
The Rockets scored
the first five points of the
second quarter before Far­
rens hit two straight long
three-pointers to make it 17-
14. After Andre Rauch hit
one of two free throws to
make it 18-16, the Mustangs
were blanked the rest of the
quarter.
The Rockets eventu­
ally led 30-18 at the half and
38-18 before Elguezabal
broke the scoring drought by
hitting a turnaround jumper,
but the Rockets pushed the
lead to 42-20. Rauch con­
verted a three-point play,
Bailey and Farrens hit three-
pointers and Bailey hit one
of two free throws to cut the
lead to 4 4 -3 0 . F arren s
scored off a rebound but the
Rockets still led 48-32 after
three.

while the Rockets hit 27 of

On Saturday against
the Tigerscots, Farrens fed
Rauch for a lay-in and Mc­
Cabe scored off a steal to
open the game for the Mus­

came back to take the lead,
but McCabe tied it at 7-7
pointers and Rauch had five
points to help the Mustangs
take a 46-30 lead midway
through the third and Rauch
hit a running jumper to make
it 48-33. However, the Ti­
gerscots went on a 10-0 run
to end the third and get to
within 48-43.

the lead to three, but Elgu­
ezabal scored tw ice and
