D uke w rites the astronomy column for The Oregonian and has taught astronomy at the Goldendale O b serv ato ry , C olum bia Gorge Discovery Center and v ario u s c o lle g es and m useum s a cro ss the N orthw est as well as for cruise ship tours. Gates supports numerous school and community activities. She is an active member of the lone Booster Club. lone Education Foundation, lone Community Church's annual auction, and is an American Legion Auxiliary member. She was treasurer of lone Community Church for a number of years. She helps at the lone Fourth of July fe stiv itie s, also helping C huck N elson w ith the "Blues Cruise” every year. Gates also coordinates the Booster Club concessions for the two day basketball tournament that lone School has before t h e basketball season starts. She was born i n H eppner and was raised and liv es in lone. She is married Woman of Year to Tom Arlynda Gates and has two children and three grandchildren. The Man of the Year is Ken B ailey. B ailey graduated from H eppner High School in 1979 and w ent to Blue M ountain C om m unity C ollege obtaining a two-year diesel mechanic degree in 1981. He has worked with the County Road Department. Pioneer Implement and Van Arsdale Construction. In 1983 he went into business with his brother-in-law, and has been a logger. He and his wife now ow n and o p erate a construction business. Bailey has been involved in many com m unity im provem ent projects including the rodeo grounds and the high school track. He barbecues for the h i g h school B o o s te r C l u b auction dinner and B o o s te r C l u b ta ilg a te p a rtie s . He also Man of Year helps feed Ken Bailey the ath le tic team s after gam es. C urrently Bailey serves as president of the Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo and has been on the rodeo board for years. He has been a 4-H leader for 12 years and he and his wife were honored as 4-H leaders of the year in 2004. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and Elks. He was instrumental in starting the St. Patrick's moto cross races and puts on the East of Ditch Clam Feed with Mike Proctor. He also serves as the coach for the high school wrestling program. He is married to Kaedene and has three ch ild ren : M eghan is a sen io r and Madison is a sophomore at Eastern Oregon University, and their son Lane is a junior at Heppner High School. Dave Fowler, a shop teacher at Heppner High School was named Citizen Educator of the Year. Fowler sta rte d a Technokigy S tu d e n ts Association C lub at the high school and is active w ith the FFA. His classes h a v e helped w i t h numerous Dave Fowler p r o je c ts Citizen Educator including storage sheds, p icnic tab le, to y s, and kitchen items. The Youth R eco g n itio n Award was given to R J F a rre n s . H e attends aw arded to JoA nne Burleson. She serves on the Assisted Living Board of Directors and is president of the Heppner Garden Club. She works with fellow club members to help supply and care for the summer hanging baskets along Main and May streets, and helps care for the flo w ers d isp la y ed at Memorial Park and the floral area su rro u n d in g the Welcome to Heppner sign at Heritage Plaza. Burleson is also heavily involved with projects involving care and upkeep of the tennis court. Each Christmas she chairs the green's workshop where approximately 60 Christmas wreaths to be sold and help o th ers m ake th eir ow n. Proceeds from this project go to help beautify the city and for scholarships for our youth. She also heads the A m b assad o rs G re eters committee that puts together visitor packets a n d d e liv e r s them to newcomers in tow n. She was a l s o r e c e n tly elected to the city c o u n c il. B urleson a l s o e n j o y s Achievement to h e l p i n g JoAnne Burleson w ith the St. P a tric k ’s c e le b ra tio n by h elp in g prepare the Irish Stew Feed and assisting in organizing the St. Patrick's Day parade. The H ep p n er G arden C lub p ro v id ed decorations. The Heppner High School senior class were servers for the evening. Students from the Heppner E lem en tary School presented a program led by Joe Lindsey and Michelle Stone. H e p p n er H i g h School where he is a me mb e r of the f oot bal 1 a n d basketball teams. He Youth is a Recognition Award given to me mb e r of the RJ Farrens National Honor Society and was the 2006 Social Studies Student of the Year at the high school. Farrens is also president of the student body at HHS. He also participates in the Heppner Elementary Colt basketball program, the B ooster C lub A uction, canned food drives, and is a child mentor for Morrow County Behavioral Health. The 2006 Business of the Year is Cornerstone G allery. T h is b u sin ess su p p o rts the C ham ber, serves on the B oard o f Directors, and volunteers for v ario u s c o m m ittees. Cornerstone Gallery put on two fishing derbies at Willow C reek R eserv o ir w ith p ro ceed s d e sig n ated to m arket H eppner. T h eir m otto is “Give people a good experience and they w ill re m em b er!” Cornerstone G allery puts Heppner on the map in a positive innovative way.
