Letters to the Editor ~ ____________ Sheriffs Report
No, we will never forget.
E ditor’s note: The following is a follow up to an
orticle about my Uncle Guy Sykes which appeared in the
Nov. 8 edition o f the newspaper. Because o f the number o f
positive comments I received about the article, I thought
readers may be interested in what followed. After the article
ran in the paper I forwarded a copy to Jim Lankford, the
official editor o f the 14"' armored division web site and
newsletter. Following is his reply:
Dear David,
“Thank you for sharing the wonderful newspaper
article you wrote about your Uncle Guy. You have done
him a great honor by remembering him and telling his story
to others. I am gratified to have been of assistance to you
in your thoughtful and patriotic work. Darrell Todd is quite
a fellow. Like most real heroes he is quiet and when asked,
simply tells things the way they were. 1 am proud to call
him friend.
1 know your family is proud of what you have
done, and your Uncle Guy is too. 1 have attached for you
a copy of the message sent by the 14th Armored Division
Association to the citizens of the Hatten and Rittershoffen
for their 60th Annual Commemoration of the battle and
their subsequent liberation from Nazi tyranny. I wrote the
message, and it was read in both French and English to the
assembled citizens by the granddaughter of a veteran of
the 14th A.D. who speaks fluent French. My good friend
Rev. Georges Pfalzgraf, who lives not far away, was in
attendance. He told me that many tears flowed when the
message was read.
You can rest assured that your Uncle Guy and the
other veterans who fought and died for their freedom, and
ours, have not, and will not be forgotten by the French
people of Hatten, Rittershoffen, and the Alsace in general."
With Best Regards,
Jim Lankford

“Liberators”
Message to the Citizens of R ittershoffen and H atten
12 June, 2005
Greetings to our Friends of Rittershoffen and
Hatten, from the Men of the 14th Armored Division:
It has been many long years since those dire, dark
days of mid-January 1945 when we came here to share in
your suffering and make our sacrifice.
Although the years have brought us to the twilight
of our lives, we have not forgotten you nor have we
forgotten what we did here.
We will never forget.
Even after we have left this earth, we will still be
jiere with you.
For in your soil is our blood.
It is mixed with yours, shed together in the cause
of liberty.
No, we will never forget.
Vive F France! Vive F American! Vive F Liberty!
Sincerely,
The Men of the 14th Armored Division
