are most valuable to bird
p o p u la tio n s when snow
cover makes it more difficult
for the birds to find food and
increases their vulnerability
to predation, says Matthews.

Longtime Prineville
resid en t Tim othy B laine
Birkby died Nov. 7,2006, at
Oregon Health and Science
University. A celebration of
life service will be held at 2
p.m. Saturday in the Eugene
Southw ell A uditorium at
Crook County High School
in Prineville.
Mr. Birkby was bom
July 28, 1956, to Benny and
JeanRae Boehmke Birkby.
He was a Life Scout,
a member of the Prineville
swim team, and the Crook
County football team where
he was named an all-star. He
g rad u ated from C rook
C ounty H igh School in
1974. He earned degrees in
elem entary education and
physical education from
E astern O regon State
College where he also played
football.
He m arried Vicki
Sue Ashcraft on Dec. 22,
1979. T hey m oved to
Heppner where he was a
te ac h e r and coach. He
co ach ed
sw im m ing,
basketball and football. In
1988, he led the Heppner
Mustangs to their first-ever
state championship game. In
1989, they re tu rn e d to
Prineville where Mr. Birkby
tau g h t
at
O choco
Elementary School.
Mr. Birkby was an
avid su p p o rter o f youth
athletics and continued his
coaching career with the
Crook County Cowboys. In
1995, he led his s o n ’s
freshm an team to an
undefeated season. He also
was actively involved with
the C rook C ounty L ittle
League, serving as president
from 1991-1993.
Mr. Birkby enjoyed
cam ping, h u n tin g , four-
wheeling, golf and watching
football.
He was preceded in
death by his father. He is
survived by his wife, Vicki;
mother; daughter, Jodi; son,
Patrick; sister, Tena Piercey;
brother, Robert; two nieces
and five nephews.

Crutchfield was born July
17, 1914, at Anson, Texas,
the son of William and Iva
May Boyd Crutchfield. He
was raised and attended
school in Texas. In 1941 he
entered the United States
Army. He served during
W orld W ar II, being
honorably discharged in
1945.
He
liv ed
in
Washington and Sandpoint,
Idaho, before m oving to
Heppner in 1993.
He
was
m arried to Lauram ay H.
Hutcheson. She preceded
him in death in December of
2000. He is survived by a
step -d a u g h te r;

Fishburn of Heppner.
