Yard of the Month recognition in Heppner for July
has been awarded to Vern and Ginger Keithley.
Their well maintained home sits on a corner lot at
590 Gale Street. The house was built in 19 and occupied
by Joe Nye. G inger’s brother, Pete Schwarzin, purchased
the home from the Nye’s estate and lived in it until selling
it to the Keithleys in 1976.
Ginger's family moved to Heppner from Western
Oregon when she was an eighth grader. She and Vern, who
is part of a large, local family, were high school sweethearts
and graduated together in 1956. They will celebrate 50
years of marriage in January 2007. Previous homes for them
were on Cowin. Water and Baltim ore Streets, all in
Heppner.
Vern is now employed by Willow Creek Park
District to do park upkeep and maintenance. In the past,
he worked at Kinzua Mills and also was a self-employed
carpenter. Vern has put those skills to use over the years
on their home with various projects, sometimes with the
help of son. Jay, who is a local area contractor/carpenter.
The Keithley's also raised daughters Ruth Ann,
Linda and Suzanne in Heppner. All four children were born
at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Vern and Ginger now share
their home with their golden cocker spaniel, Noel.
A volunteer now at the Neighborhood Center,
Ginger is retired from her ‘downtown’ jobs; she clerked at
Peterson's Jewelry for 18 years and Coast to Coast for 12
years. She and Vern sell gourds at craft fairs that they have
crafted into works of art with help from Linda.
Vern mows the thick grass lawn w hile Ginger trims
it. They both pull weeds. A clean, crisp white lattice fence
in the side yard defines the only property line shared with a
neighbor. Below is a raised bed full of a variety of plants
that Ginger enjoys trying such as Christmas roses, lobelia,
holly, coral bells, ornamental grasses and clematis vine. The
pansies and primroses scattered throughout are Vern’s
favorite plants. t
G inger’s favorite plantings are a number of maple
trees that provide deep, cooling shade and an invitation to
the backyard. Located there is the generously large, wood
deck used almost year round. Hanging from the deck’s
cover are colorful lights and hanging baskets of annuals.
Planters full of flowers are scattered around its broad steps.
Willow Creek provides the property's back border, a
constant cool breeze and the soothing sound of flowing
water.
The yard is very bird friendly and a variety of birds
nest throughout. In the past, beavers began falling
neighborhood trees for a dam on the creek, but fortunately
spared Keithleys’ trees.
The backyard in general is Vern’s favorite place
while Ginger's is the lawn swing that sits on a brick paved
area. Other plantings throughout the property are spireas,
snowball and mock apple shrubs, apple, apricot and Linden
trees. The yard’s shade is so deep that Vern’s sister, Trish
Sweeney, calls it their “jungle.” However, there is enough
of a sunny spot to allow room for a clothesline for fresh air
drying.
Future plans are to replace the home's original
sidewalk that leads to the garage/workshop. More shrubs
might be planted in place o f flowers to cut back on
maintenance.
The Keithleys have a long history of keeping up
appearances of their yard. In August 1981, they were
recognized as “Garden of the Month" by the Hcppner-
Morrow County Chamber of Commerce and received a
copy o f the book, “Homes and Heritages" by Gil French.
Both Vern and Ginger are interested in gardening
so much that it is enjoyment to them, not work. And the
community of Heppner appreciates and benefits from the
results, in 1981 and 25 years later in 2(X)6.
Yard of the Month recognition is co-sponsored by
the Heppner Garden Club. MCGG Green Feed. Heppner
TV and the City of Heppner.
