He was born March
27, 1934 at Swain County,
NC to Graybom and Grace
(Sutton) Stephenson.

raised in North Carolina and
g rad u ated from Sw ain
County High School in Bry­
son City. He served in the
U.S. Army during the Kore­
an Conflict.
After the service, he
m oved to O regon and
worked at a sawmill in Kin-
zua.
On Oct. 31,1957, he
m arried D o ro th a “ D o t”
Weems at Goldendale, WA.
They moved to California
and Stephenson drove bus
for Continental Trailways for
several years. In 1969, they
returned to Oregon and lived
in Stanfield where Stephen­
son worked for the Stanfield
Irrigation District. He then
worked for Ross Machine
Shop, Noland Door and fi­
nally as a carman for the
Union Pacific Railroad until
he retired in 1996.
He was a member of
the Gospel Home Church in
Hermiston. He enjoyed hunt­
ing, fishing, and camping.
Survivors include his
wife of 48 years, Dorotha
“Dot” Stephenson of Hepp­
ner; three daughters, Pame­
la R ogers o f H erm iston,
Kimberly Mescall of Mos­
cow, ID and Dee Bailey of
S te p h e n v ille , TX ; tw o
brothers, Charles and Mack
Stephenson both of Bryson
City, NC; two sisters, Inez
Davis of Bryson City, NC
and Irene Huggins of Fran­
klin, NC; and three grand­
ch ild ren and one great-
grandson. He was preceded
in death by his parents,

Dennis Jobes
Dennis Jobes, 83, a
lo n g tim e
Pilot
Rock
resident, died Saturday, May
27, 2006 at home with his
family by his side after a
c o u ra g eo u s b attle w ith
cancer.
Viewing was held
June 1 at Bums Mortuary in
Pendleton with the rosary
held that evening at St.
Helen’s Catholic Church in
P ilo t R ock. A funeral
services was held June 2 at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church
in Pendleton followed by
b u rial at P ilot Rock
Cemetery.
Jobes was bom May
11, 1923 in Spirit Lake, ID
to Lester and Lillian Jobes.
He graduated from Spirit
Lake High School in 1942,
where he was co-captain of
the only basketball team to
win a State Championship in
Spirit Lake history. He later

Normal College in Lewiston,
ID.
He was an Arm y
v eteran serving d u ring
World War II in the Pacific.
On Sept. 19, 1948,
he married the love of his
life, Helen Kucera at St.
M ary’s Catholic Church in
Pendleton. They moved to
Pilot Rock in 1952 where
they owned and operated the
Pilot Rock Grocery Store for
37 years.
Jobes was an active
member of St. Helen’s Parish
in Pilot Rock. He was a
member of the Jay C ee’s,
who were instrumental in
developing the little league
field. He was a volunteer
firefighter in Pilot Rock. He
helped organize the Pilot
Rock Booster Club and also
was a member of the Elk’s
Lodge, Eagle’s Lodge and
the Pendleton Country Club
where he had many good
friends and enjoyed good
times.

sporting events, especially

On March 5, 1932,
she married Alex Cornett
G reen at Pendleton. She
worked many years with her
husband in their store. Green
Feed and Seed until it was
sold when they retired. She
was a lifelong resident of
Heppner until moving into
Juniper House in 1999.
Green had a lifelong
goal to travel to England to
visit her cousins, which she
got to do and her cousin later
came from England to visit
her and tour Oregon.
She was a member of
the Rebekah Lodge, Book
W orm s and the U nited
M eth o d ist C h u rch . H er
h o b b ies w ere k n ittin g ,
needlepoint and she was an
avid reader.

31,1919, eight miles west of
Condon, to Blain and Minnie
Maley. She attended her first
three years of school at the
little white school house at
Igo, near Condon. Her father
was elected county assessor
and the family moved into
C o n d o n . She atte n d ed
school there graduating from
high school in 1937.
On Sept. 5, 1940,
she married Fred J. Reed at
P ay ette, ID. T he couple
remained in Condon until
moving to Heppner in 1991.
They celebrated their 50,h
w ed d in g a n n iv e rsa ry in
1990. Mr. Reed preceded
her in death in 1995.

She was bom Feb. 6,
1912 at M o n u m en t, the
daughter of Archie and Ruth
Sweek Aiken. She attended
school at M onum ent and
T igard, g rad u atin g from
Tigard High School.
In M ay o f 1931,

Sherman, they had one son,
Calvin Sherman. The couple
later divorced.
In 1950, she moved
to S e a ttle and a tten d ed
beauty college. It was in
Seattle that she met Wesley
Haskett, they were married
on Jan 18, 1953. The couple
moved to California and later
to Westport, WA. In 1970,
they moved to Hermiston
where Mr. Haskett preceded
her in death.
