The 2006 Heppner Junior High track team finished their season out just as the
new rubberized layer was being laid on the track. The team appreciates all the individuals,
ranchers, farmers and businesses that contributed to the project. The track is open for
area walkers and joggers to use.

The

Mustang baseball team had
their season come to an end
in Hermiston by the Culver
Bulldogs by a score of 9-7
in the C o lu m b ia B asin

tournam ent on Saturday,
May 20. The gam e was
originally scheduled for The
Dalles but rain forced it to
moved to Hermiston. The
Mustangs ended the season
with a 12-12 record and said
goodbye to seniors Kyle
C arlson, Dan Basile and
from lone, Tony Bolin.
The
B ulldogs
jum ped out to a 1-0 lead
after one, but the Mustangs
came back with two runs in
the top of the second when
Nathan Kennedy was hit by
a pitch, Dan Basile doubled
and both scored on a Kyle
Carlson double. They added
one more in the third when
N acho E lg u ezab al and
Andre Rauch singled, Basile
sin g led and E lguezabal
scored when Robbie Smith
reached on an error.
The Bulldogs came
back with three runs in the
b ottom h alf, but the
Mustangs tied it at 4-4 when
Tony Bolin doubled and
e v en tu a lly scored when
Elguezabal reached on a
fielder’s choice.
The Bulldogs scored
two runs in the fifth and three
more in the sixth to take a 9-
4 lead, but the M ustangs
couldn't go quietly as Basile
singled, Carlson walked and
Bolin launched a homerun to
left to cut the score to 9-7,
but the rally ended there and
the season ended.
Bolin went three for
four with three RBI and
scored twice. Basile and
Rauch each went three for
four with Basile scoring
twice. Carlson went two for
three w ith tw o RBI and
Quinn Peck went two for
four.

Blue Basin hike offered
John Day Fossil
Beds National Monument
will offer a ranger-conducted
hike into the spectacular
Blue Basin fossil beds. This
two-hour hike will feature
the geologic landscape and
fossil history of the basin.
The hike will begin
at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June
11 at the Blue B asin
trailhead, located three miles
north of the Sheep Rock
Unit visitor center along
State Route 19. There is no
fee and participants should
bring good hiking shoes, a
sun hat, jacket, water bottle
and a camera.

Nine students complete piano
Oregon Trail Library District
adjudications
launches summer reading program
Pet lovers of all kinds are invited to join “Paws,
Claws, Scales and Tales" at the Heppner branch library.
The 2006 Summer Reading Program is open to young
people, preschool through eighth grade, with programs,
stories, crafts and more. The programs will be held on
Wednesdays, from 11:15 a.m. to 12 noon.
The schedule of events include:

June 21 - Birds and Things
June 28- Wild. Tame and In-between
July 5- S-S-Ssay, Who's That?
July 12- Animal That Make Food

Memorial Day Dinner held at St. Patrick's Senior Center
on May 28.

with fundamentals, followed
by competitions- games and

Nine piano students recently completed piano
syllabus adjudications sponsored by the Oregon Music
Teachers Association. Completed levels are as follows:
Jonathan Chen. Level I; Bethany Van Cleave. Level II;
Stephanie Schuler. Emily Thompson and Daniel Van
Cleave, Level 111; Sarah Stillman, Level IV; Rebecca Jepsen,
Level VII; Kristen Van Cleave. Level VIII; and Cameron
Anderson. Level IX.
The students were required to perform three or four
memorized pieces in addition to scales, chords, arpeggios,
sight reading and ear training. Teachers of the students
include Cameron Anderson and Myrna Van Cleave of
Heppner and Phyllis Peterson of Hermiston.
