Mustang JVs end season with
loss to Bucks
Mustangs sweep Rockets to earn Murray receives scholarship

The
H ep p n er
Mustang JV baseball team
ended their season with a
tough 11-9 loss to the
Pendleton Buck frosh team
in Pendleton on Thursday,
May 11. The Mustangs, who
ended up 5 and 6 on the year,
were tied with the Bucks at
3-3, going into the fourth of
the second game when it was
called on acco u n t o f
darkness.
The Mustangs were
able to get on the board first
in the top of the first when
Dalton Wellman led off with
a walk, stole second and
ended up at third when the
throw sailed into centerfield.
Justin A rcher singled to
score W ellm an but the
M ustangs failed to score
anymore as they had runners
at second and third with no
out and c o u ld n ’t com e
through with the clutch hit.
The Bucks tied it in
the bottom half and it stayed
that way until the fourth
when the Mustangs took the
lead when Nathan Kennedy
d o u bled and ended up
scoring on a Sean Murray
fielder’s choice. The Bucks
came back with two in the
bottom half to take the lead,
but the Mustangs came back
w ith three of their own in the
fifth when Archer singled,
A ndre R auch w alked,
Kennedy walked and Josh
Shank cleared the bases with
a double to give them a 5-3
lead.
The Bucks cut the
lead to one in the bottom half
but the Mustangs came back
with three more in the top of
the sixth when Wellman and
Archer singled, Ben McCarl
had an RBI single, Archer
scored on a balk, Kennedy
singled. Shank walked and
Murray forced a run home
with another walk to make
it 8-4.
The B ucks cam e
right back with seven runs in
the bottom half to regain the
lead but back cam e the
Mustangs in the top of the
seventh as Chris Wellington
led off with a bunt single,
stole second and scored on
an Archer double, but the
rally ended there and they
took an 11-9 loss.
Archer went four for
five w ith tw o RBI and
scored twice. Kennedy went
two for three and scored
twice, Wellman went two for
five and scored twice. Shank
had three RBI and Murray
had two RBI.

Tigers hold off Mustangs to
clinch title

T he
H eppner
M ustang b aseb all team
rallied with two runs in the
top of the seventh but the
Stanfield Tigers held on to a
5-3 win on Tuesday, May 9
to clinch the Columbia Basin
Conference East title and go
into district as the number
one seed. The Mustangs, 7
and 3 in the CBC and 9 and
11 overall, could still secure
second place with at least a
split with the Pilot Rock
Rockets on Friday, May 12.
The Tigers jumped
out to a 2-0 lead in the first
on a two-out bloop single
and it stayed that way until
the third when the Mustangs
finally go on the board.
Quinn Peck reached on an
error with two out, Nacho
E lg u ezab al sin g led and
Andre Rauch had an RBI
single.
The Tigers scored a
run in the bottom of the third
and added two more in the
fifth before the Mustangs
finally got some offense
going in the seventh. Dan
Basile reached on an error
and scored on a Kyle Carlson
double. Peck was hit by a
pitch and Carlson scored as
Peck stole second. The rally
ended there though as the
Tigers held on for the win.

W ith a 4-3 eight
inning win in the first game,
the H eppner M ustang
baseball team wrapped up
second place in the Columbia
B asin C o n feren ce E ast
division over the visiting
Pilot Rock R ockets on
Friday, May 12. The
M ustangs w ent on to
complete the sweep with a
9-1 win in the second game
to finish 9 and 3 in the CBC
and 11 and 11 overall. The
Mustangs were to host the
Dufur Rangers, the third
place team in the CBC west
division on Tuesday, May
16, w ith the w in n er
advancing to the District 7
tournament in The Dalles on
Saturday, May 20.
The Rockets took a
2-0 lead in the top of the
third before the Mustangs
finally got on the board in the
fourth when Tony Bolin
doubled and scored on a
Quinn Peck double.
The Rockets got that
run back in the fifth, but the
Mustangs tied it in the sixth
when Bolin singled, went to
second on a wild pitch. Peck
had a two-out RBI single,
went to second on the throw
home and scored on a Nacho
Elguezabal single.
The Rockets were
threatening with runners at
first and third with two out
in the sev en th but the
centerfielder Cody Hollis
mad ea diving catch in the
gap to save at least one run
and keep the Mustangs in it.
In the bottom of the
eighth, Peck was hit by a
pitch, E lg u ezab al had a
sacrifice bunt, Andre Rauch
singled, Robbie Smith was
intentionally walked to load
the b ases and N athan
Kennedy hit a sharp single to
score Peck and give the
Mustangs the win.
Peck went all eight
in n in g s, giv in g up tw o
earned runs, striking out four
and walking three to pick up
the win. He helped himself
at the plate going three for
three with a double and two
RBI. Bolin went two for four
with a double and scored
twice and Rauch went two
Laurie Murray was
awarded a $500 scholarship
from St. Anthony Hospital
and the Health Professions
Scholarship Committee.

to encourage the youth of
the area to pursue healthcare
professions and return to the

double. They added three
more in the sixth when Bolin
and Justin Archer walked,
Ben McCarl was hit by a
pitch, Bolin scored on a w ild
pitch, Dan Basile had an RBI
sin g le and Josh Shank
walked with the bases loaded
to score another run.

giving up one hit, walking
two and struck out four w ith
Kyle Carlson going three
innings, giving up three hits
and striking out two.
Basile went two for
three with two RBI. Rauch
had a homerun and two RBI.

This last week. May
8-11. the sixth graders of
Heppner and lone took a
week off of regular school to
p artak e in the annual
outdoor school at Tupper.
The kids stayed in different
houses with counselors that
are from the high school.
This year the girls were all
in one house, but still divided
into two groups- Silver Fox
or Spotted Fawn. The boys
were in two different houses
and were either a Roaring
Cougar or Soaring Eagle.
During the week the
kids had d ifferen t field
studies each day that taught
them about weather, soil,
w ildlife, compass and plants.
On Tuesday night,
there was also a surprise
astronomy lesson that was
put on by Mr. Rice and Mr.

On
W ednesday,
every one at Tupper goes to
Bull Prairie for the day. At
Bull Prairie the kids learn
about survival with their
survival kits and also about
water, the ph levels and what
w ild life is liv in g in it.
Wednesday is also the last
night and usually there is a
night hike that evening. It
was unfortunate this year
though because due to some
technical bus problems the
night hike had to be called
off. S’mores were still served
and th e ir was a T u pper
Talent Show the next day.
On
T hursday,
everything was packed up
and everyone headed back to
either lone or Heppner. With
sunny skies all last week, it
was the perfect week to have
Outdoor School.
