c o m p e tito rs,
action
photographers, and several
official-looking observers
brought Irish Road Bowling
to H eppner’s Wee Bit O ’
Irelan d c e le b ra tio n on
Sunday afternoon.
Tim Daly was the
afternoon’s hero when he
showed up from Portland
one hour before the start of
the event, bringing the bowls
with which the activity is
played. Daly, raised on Little
Butter Creek, is the young
man who brought Irish road
bowling to the attention of
the local com m ittee and
suggested that it be added to
the weekend's schedule. He
not only donated ten bowls
for the event (which the St.
Pat's Committee hopes will
become an annual weekend
finale), but he drove from
Portland Sunday morning
after working a function for
his children on Saturday
night, and he put together a
team for the competition.
Everyone gathered
at the steps of the Morrow
County Courthouse at 1:30
p.m ., got co p ies o f the
official rules and guidelines,
heard a brief description of
the course, and the game
began on Court Street.
Two local women,
M olly R hea and D onna
Sehonbachler, who came to
watch the activity, ended up
as teammates of Daly. Daly's
sister, Jeanne, became their
sc o rek e ep e r
and
photographer.
V ictor and Nancy
Vander Does, the couple
who co-chaired the Casino
Night event on Friday, were
first to show for Sunday's
event. They led off with
some effective tosses that
would set the pace for what
became an extremely close
competition.
Always w illing to
participate when they come
from R edm ond for the
weekend activities, Kirk and
Lottie (Laughlin) Holcomb
form ed the third team o f
b o w lers
w ith
K irk ’s
daughter, Keri, and Jerod
Lopez.
The course included
segments of eight city streets
that w ere not clo sed to
tra ffic , so the need fo r
vigilance was high. Donning
orange vests. Cliff Green,
M erlin H ughes, B utch
Laughlin, and Dan Brosnan
volunteered to accompany
the teams through the course
as added security. Following
the action closely, also, was
Cara Osmin, co-chair of the
St. P a t’s C om m ittee and
volunteer photographer.
A few w eek en d
re v e lers w ho had heard
about the road bowling and
some of the residents along
the course enjoyed watching
the action, as the team s
tossed the 28-oz. bow ls
along stra ig h t-a -w a y s,
comers, and a hill.
Play cam e to a
conclusion at the comer of
May and C hase S treets.
Claudia Hughes, co-chair of
the St. P a t’s C om m ittee,
thanked the participants and
presented each with a special

D oeses announced th e ir
donation to cover the cost of
the trophy for the event, and
Doris Brosnan announced
the w in n in g team : T he
Holcomb team with a total
of 26 tosses of the bowl.
Second was the Daly team,
w ith 29, and the Vander
Does team was close, with
31 tosses.
Each p a rtic ip a n t
paid $5 to play, and the
winning team received half
of the total purse, with the
other half going to the St.
Pat’s fund. The Holcomb
team , how ever, d o n ated
their share to the fund.
The Irish R oad
Bowling trophy, created by
Peterson's Jewelers, will be
engraved with the names of
the winning players and will
be prominently displayed in
Heppner.
Participants agreed
that the first-time event was
“fun,” and immediately after
play, they were discussing
“training,” “strategy," and
“blogging,” with a bigger
event in mind for next year.
