lone boys’ varsity logs 2 wins Heppner Schools Calendar
The lone B oy’s
V arsity b ask etb all team
logged two wins this past
weekend, opening play in the
Big Sky Conference with
victories over Helix and
Central Christian.
H elix hosted the
C ardinals on Friday and
looked like they wanted to
give the Cards a run for their
money. A tight first quarter
saw the scored knotted at
nine and the second quarter
w asn’t much better with
lone sco rin g 11 to the
Grizzlies' five to lead 20-14
at the half, lone settled
down in the second half,
leading 34-22 at the end of
three and stretching the lead
out in the fourth for the final
49-30 margin.
Tyler Brown led all
scorers with 20 points. Two
other Cardinals scored in
double fig u res, K elly
Thompson with 13 and Paul
H am s w ith 10. Brown
grabbed nine reb o u n d s,
Brown and Tony Bolin each
had three assists and
Thompson had six steals to
pace the team. Nik Kamp
had a good rebounding effort
also with eight boards. The
Cards out- rebounded Helix
36-29.

Stefani noted that Tyler
Brow n had a good all-
around performance in the
physical contest. He also
was pleased w ith Nik
Kamp’s rebounding and the
terrific defensive game by
Kelly Thompson.
“Helix gave us all we
wanted." said Stefani. “They
took us out of our game for
two quarters but then we
started to get things going."
On S aturday, the
Cardinals returned to their
home court for the first time
in almost a month, hosting
Central Christian.

jumped out to an early lead
but the C ardinals battled
back, taking control of the
game and holding it for the
rest of the outing. lone led
14-9 after one, 35-0 at the
half and 61-40 after three.
The final score was lone, 84,
Central Christian, 59.

Tyler Brown, 15 and Paul
Hams, 10.

Coach Stefani said
he was pleased with the
game. “Tony Bolin had a
real solid game for us,” said
Stefani. “ I felt we finally
played a good sound game.

everyone performed well.”

Morrow County District Attorney David C. Allen
has released the following report:
-Juan Carlos Guzman Madrigal was convicted of
Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, a Class C Felony, Possession
of a Controlled Substance and Driving While Suspeneded.
Madrigal was sentenced to 24 months probation and
ordered to complete 80 hours of community service, submit
to drug evaluation and follow-up treatment, and pay fines,
fees and assessments of $2,458.
-John Brandon Paradise was convicted of violation
of probation for Attemping to Elude A Police Officer.
Probation was extended for one year.
-Dean Laroy Staten was convicted of Physical
H eppner M ustang Harrassment, and was ordered to complete 20 hours of
girls’ basketball team will community service and pay fines, fees and assessments of

On Friday, January
6, the lone Middle School
basketball teams traveled to
H elix to take on the
Grizzlies. The girls suffered
a loss when they finished
their A-team game, 3-40.
The Cardinals were out one
o f their starters, Stefanie
A rcher, due to sickness.

The lone boys stayed paced
with the Grizzlies early in
their game and went to the
locker room tied 11-11 at
halftime. The Grizzlies took
control in the second half
and went on to win 30-19.

Sherman County Huskies.
The lone girls lost their
gam e, 15-25. L ead in g
scorers for the C ardinals
were JoA nna Patton and
Tyree Svetich, both with

and Heather Wiggers each
had two points.
The lone boys once again
stayed on pace early, but fell
behind 28-20 at the end of
the third quarter. At that
point Coach Mike Garrett
challenged his team to “Hold
them at 28.” The players
responded and outscored the
Huskies, 8-0, in the fourth
quarter sending the game
into o v e rtim e . In the
overtime period, the Cards
did not forget their challenge
and held the H u sk ies
scoreless again, finishing off
the gam e w ith a 34-28
victory.

The lone Cardinals Boy’s
Varsity team ended up with
a long Christmas break due
to a w eather cancellation
before Christmas, but the
team did take the court twice
after the holiday, recording
one win and one loss.
The Cards traveled
to Irrigon on Dec. 29 to
challenge the Knights. After
shaking off a bit of holiday
rust, the Cardinals jumped
out to a 19-8 first quarter
lead, lengthening the lead to
a 33-13 halftime margin. The
Knights continued to fight
hard, cutting the opponents’
lead to 15 in the third quarter
and hanging with the Cards
in the fourth. The final score
was 62-48 in favor of lone.
Kelly Thompson led
three Cardinals into double
figures with 18 points. Tony
B olin had 17 and Tyler
Brown added 13. Brown
also had a fine rebounding
e ffo rt w ith 14 bo ard s,
leading the team to a 37-23
margin.
“It was good to get
back on the court after a long
layoff. We played like we had
been away for a while," said
coach Dennis Stefani. “The
kids did a gtxxl job of getting
a big lead early and allow ing
e v ery o n e to get som e
playing time."
The following night,
the C ard s took on the

in
Hermiston. The Bulldogs
put a tall, fast-moving team
on the floor that immediately
ju m p e d
out
to
a
q u a rte r
ad v an tag e.
However, the Cards pulled
to within 15 at the half, 45-
32, and finally to within 10
p o in ts d u rin g the th ird
quarter before the Bulldogs
used their depth to pull away
for good. The final score was
74-55. Hermiston.
The Cards had three
players in double figures
again that night, led by Tony
Bolin with 15 points, Tyler
Brown with 13 and Nick
Kamp with 10.
“This was a great
game for us to play before
startin g
o ur
league
sc h e d u le ." said coach
Stefani. “Hermiston always
puts out great teams for us
to play. Even though we lost,
the kids come away from
these ty p es o f g am es
learning quite a bit. I think if
we could have come out of
the gates playing well, this
could have been a closer
game."
Tiffany Piper
earns 4.0
T iffan y Piper, a
stu d en t at Mt. H ood
C om m u n ity C o lleg e in
Troutdale. received a 4.0 for
fall term. She is currently
enrolled in the mental health/
human services associate
d egree program and is
eligible for the co lle g e ’s
president’s list.
A 2(X)4 graduate of
Heppner High School. Piper
is the daughter of Dave and
Pam Piper of Heppner.
