Mustang girls’ basketball season begins

The 2005-06 varsity
basketball season for the
H ep p n er M ustang girls
started well, with a 44-40
win over the Grant Union
Prospectors on Thursday,
Dec. 1 in John Day. They
came out a little flat the next
night at home, dropping a
57-51 decision to the Imbler
Panthers. H eppner cam e
back with a 45-38 win over
the R iverside P irates on
T uesday, Dec. 6 in
B oardm an, but lost tw o
close
gam es at the
Harrisburg Tournament: on
Friday, Dec. 9, Santiam
Christian beat the Mustangs
40-34, and on Saturday,
Dec. 10, they gave up a
fourth quarter lead and lost
49-41 to Harrisburg.
At Grant Union, The
Mustangs jumped out to an
11 -4 lead after one, getting
five points from Megan Orr,
but the Prospectors came
back to get within 18-17 at
the half. Orr had four more
points in the third as the
M ustangs increased their
lead to 33-28 and Lyndi
Patton had four points in the
fourth as they held on for the
win.
Orr finished with 11
points, six rebounds, five
steals and four assists, with
Regi Seitz scoring eight
points, grabbing 11 rebounds
and three steals. Sarah Price

rebounds and three assists;
Patton had six points and

Mustangs got off to a slow
start ag ain st S antiam
Christian, as the Santiam led
9-4 after one and 18-10 at
the half. The Mustangs came
back in the third, getting 12
points from Orr and four
from Betsinger to cut the
lead to 28-27, but Santiam
Christian pulled away in the
fourth, taking the 40-34 win.
Orr finished with 14
points and six rebounds, with
Seitz adding seven points,
seven rebounds, four steals
and two assists. Kilkenny
had nine rebounds; Peck had
seven rebounds and two
steals, and Patton had four
steals.
He won't melt.

Against the Bulldogs was much closer through the
first half as the Mustangs led just 16-14 after one, getting
seven points from Van Cleave and five from Haguewood.
They increased it to 29-25 at the half, getting five second-
quarter pints fro Bailey and four from Elguezabal. They
broke it open in the third as Haguewood had 10 pints. Van
Cleave, five, and Allstott, four points to give them a 50-29
lead. Van Cleave had six points and Haguewood, four, as
they continued to pull away for the easy win.
Van Cleave again led the Mustangs with 21 points
and grabbed 10 rebounds with Haguewood added 19 points
and 11 rebounds. Allstott had nine points and five assists.
Elguezabal had 10 rebounds, Dalton Wellman had four
assists and Bailey and Delveaux each had three assists.

The Heppner Mustang JV boys started the 2005-
06 season with two blow-outs, winning at Irrigon, 69-15,
on Friday, December 16, and at home against Culver on
Saturday, Dec. 17, by a score of 69-42.
They jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter at
Irrigon, getting 10 points from Nathan Van Cleave and four
each from Nathan Kennedy, Tony Haguewood and Aaron
