Mustang girls open CBC

By Rick Paullus
The Heppner Mustang varsity girls broke open a
close game with a 22-4 run from the end of the first through
the middle of the second quarters to take a 58-29 win over
the Irrigon Knights on Friday, December 16, to open
Columbia Basin Conference play in Irrigon. The Mustangs,
three and three over all, will have non-league games at the
Camas, WA, tournament on Wednesday, December 29, and
at DeSales on Friday, December 30, before getting back
into CBC play the following weekend.
The Mustangs took a 6-2 lead early on a rebound
basket by Katie Kilkenny and four points from Regi Seitz,
but the Knights came back to tie it at 6-6. Aftan Betsigner
scored off a pass from Megan Orr and Kilkenny scored off
a rebound, and after the Knights got to within 10-8, the
Mustangs took off. Orr scored off a steal, Betsinger scored
inside, Sherilyn Peck scored off an assist from Orr and Seitz
got a steal and a lay-in to make it 18-8 at the end of one.
After Knights scored to open the second, Peck and
Kilkenny scored inside, Seitz hit a short jum per and
Kilkenny fed Peck for a lay-in to make it 26-10. Seitz hit
one of two free throws and made a lay-in and Whitney
Matthews hit a three-pointer as the Mustangs took a 32-
16 lead at the half.
The Mustangs started the third like they ended the
second as Orr hit a three-pointer, Seitz scored off a rebound
and Betsinger scored twice to make it 40-18. Kilkenny hit
one of two free throws and Orr scored five straight points
as they took a 46-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Matthews hit a three-pointer and a long jumper and
Seitz converted a three-point play to increase the lead to
54-24. Lynan Bingham and Kylie Doherty each hit one of
two free throws and Matthews hit a short jumper to close
out the scoring as the Mustangs cruised to the 58-29 win.
Seitz led the Mustangs with 15 points, 10 rebounds,
four steals and four assists. Matthews had 10 points,
Kilkenny had nine points and eight rebounds, Betsinger
had five rebounds and two assists and Lyndi Patton and
Taylor Kempas each had four rebounds and two steals.
