Mustangs start slow, finish strong to rout Huskies

After falling behind
7-0 after one quarter and 10-
8 late in the second, the
Heppner Mustangs rallied to
beat the Sherman County
H uskies 46-16 on Friday,
November 4 in Moro. The
M u stan g s fin ish ed the
Columbia Basin Conference
at 6 and 0 in winning their
48 straight league game and
ended the regular season
with a 9 and 0 record.
The Mustangs will
get a week off by w inning the
conference and will play the
winner of Glide and Lost
River at home on Saturday,
Nov. 19 in the second round
of the U.S Bank/Les Schwab
O SA A C lass 2A state
championships.
The H uskies were
unable to move the ball on
their first possession and the
Mustangs took over at their
own 41-yard line after the
punt. Matt Kenny ran twice
for nine yards and M att
McCabe went one for a first
down then Quinn Peck hit
Matt VanCleave for a 20-
yard gain but the drive
stalled and the Huskies took
over on downs at their own
30-yard line.
The Huskies drove
down the field and scored on
a 16-yard pass and kicked
the extra point for a 7-0 lead
late in the first quarter.
The Mustangs were
unable to move the ball and
had to punt and back came
the Huskies who drove into
Heppner territory but Peck
picked o ff a pass and
returned it to the Mustang 30
yard line. On third and long,
Peck hit VanCleave for a 13-
yard gain and a first down
Kenny broke free for a 31
yard gain to the Husky 23
tw enty-three and after an
incomplete pass, Peck hit
Kenny wide open down the
side line for a touchdown.
Peck ran in the two-point
c o n v ersio n for an 8-7
H eppner lead m idw ay
through the second quarter.
The Huskies came
right back to regain the lead
on a 32-yard field goal after
a long kick-off return.
Trailing 10-8, back
came the Mustangs taking
over at their 38-yard line
after a 28-yard return on the
kickoff by McCabe. Peck hit
VanCleave for 33 yards, then
ran for five, Kenny went for
thirteen the 6 yards to the
five w here Peck took it
around end and just got in
the end zone fo r the
touchdown. Kenny ran in the
two-point conversion to give
the Mustangs a 16-10 lead
at the half.
The Mustangs took
the second half kickoff and
after Kenny ran four times
for 10 yards the Huskies
picked o ff a pass and
returned it to the fourteen.
Kenny ran twice for
three, M cC abe w ent for
seven and first dow n,
M cCabe went for three,
Peck hit VanCleave for 19
yards and McCabe ran for
three more to the 50-yard
line. Peck then hit VanCleave
down the sideline who out
ran the defense to end zone
for the touchdown. Peck ran
on the conversion to make it
24-10.
The Huskies were
pinned back at their 15-yard
line after a deep kickoff by
McCabe and on third and
long Peck picked off his third
pass of the night at midfield.
Kenny broke free for 25
yards then went twice more
for 16 yards to the nine.
M cCabe picked up three
then Kenny took it in from
the six for the touchdown.
Kenny ran in the two-point
c o n v ersio n to give the
Mustangs a 32-10 at the end
of the third quarter.
The H u sk ies had
good field position at their
40 yard line after the kickoff
but

recovered a fumble at the
Sherman forty four to give
the Mustangs the ball back.
Peck hit Rory Kilkenny for
a 26 yard gain then ran for 8
yards and five more and a
first down at the five. After
a loss of one, McCabe took
it in for the touchdown. The
conversion failed but the
Mustangs led 38-10 early in
the fourth quarter.
The Huskies again
had good field position after
the kickoff taking over at
midfield and drove to the five
before the drive stalled with
the Mustangs taking over at
the nine yard line. Kenny
went for 23 yards then Justin
D elveaux broke sev eral
tackles on the way to a 68-
yard touchdown run. Josh
Shank ran in the conversion
for a 46-10 with 5:50 left in
the game.
The H uskies were
unable to move the ball and
the Mustangs took over on
downs but an interception
was returned 56 yards for a
touchdown. The kick was no
good and the Mustangs led
46-16 led in the game.
The M ustangs got
the kickoff and were able to
run out the clock as Kody
Lovgren ran three times for
12 yards and Eddie Waddell
ran twice for six yards.
The defense was led
by M cC abe w ith 25
defensive points with Peck
adding 23 points and three
interceptions, Kilkenny and
Kyle Carlson each had 19
points, D elveaux had 14
points, Kenny 13 points,
Hodges 12 points and Peter
Geer and Robbie Smith each
getting 9 points.

times for 155 yards as the
Mustangs rushed for nearly
300 yards as a team.

Behavioral Health receives grant
for veterans and families.
Morrow/Wheeler Behavioral Health has received a
grant for veterans and their families.
This grant provides funding for counseling services
for veterans and families of veterans. Additionally, the
funding can be used to purchase fuel, meals and lodging
for individuals to access services at the Veterans’ Hospital.
