Tùrnovers key Mustang win over Amity
By Rick Paullus
Mustang senior Matt
Kenny picked up the fourth
Amity Warrior fumble of the
night and returned it 67 yards
for the go-ahead touchdown
and, with less than seven
minutes left, the Heppner
Mustangs held on for a 15-
12 win on Friday, Sept. 2,
win in Amity.
The Mustangs (1 -0)
picked up their First win over
the Warriors in six tries and
will go for the second win of
the season at home against
the Mac-Hi Pioneers on
Friday, Sept. 9, in a non
league game.
The Warriors took
the opening kick-off and
were driving when Zack
Kurtz made a huge hit,
causing a fumble that Matt
McCabe jumped on at the
Heppner 19-yard line. Two
runs by Kenny for nine yards
and a 15-yard run by
McCabe gave the Mustangs
a first down at the 43-yard
line. The drive stalled,
though, and the Warriors
took over at their 16 after a
35-yard McCabe punt.
On first down, a
bobble in the backfield
jumped on by Rory Kilkenny
at the 13 gave the Mustangs
great field position.
Kenny ran three
times, taking it to the one,
where Matt Van Cleave took
it in for the Mustangs’ first
touchdown of the year.
McCabe’s extra point made
it 7-0 late in the first quarter.
On the W arriors’
next possession, Kilkenny
caused and recovered a
fumble at the Mustang 43,
but the Mustangs were
unable to move the ball and
Amity took over at their own
29 after the punt.
The Warriors drove
down the field, scoring on an
eight-yard fun. A bad snap on
the extra point attempt kept

the score 7-6 in the favor of
the Mustangs, with a little
over seven minutes left in the
half.
Neither team could
get their offense going
through most of the third
quarter until the Warriors
drove deep inside Mustang
territory, but Lane Bailey
picked off a pass inside the
five to end the drive. The
Mustangs gave it right back
on a fumble and the Warriors
scored on a three-yard run
to take a 12-7 lead early in
the fourth.
After a Mustang
punt, Amity had driven inside
Heppner territory, but Casey
Maben blitzed on an option
attempt, causing the fumble
that Kenny picked up and
took all the way to the end
zone. Van Cleave went up
high to take the two-point
conversion pass from Quinn
Peck to make in 15-12.
The Warriors took
over at their own 20 after the
kickoff and were forced to
punt after Kenny blitzed and
tackled the runner for a five-
yard loss on third down. The
Mustangs then had excellent
field position at the 23-yard
line after a three-yard punt.
Maben carried twice
for nine yards and, on fourth
and short, Kenny picked the
first down at the 12. Kenny
went twice for nine yards,
but a loss forced a fourth
down at the four. A Warrior
interception at the goal line
was brought back to the 34-
yard line with 1:16 left.
But the defense held
and, on fourth down,
Kilkenny and Kenny sacked
the quarterback for a four-
yard loss, giving the
Mustangs the ball back at the
26-yard line with :46 4 left.
They ran out the clock to
take the win. i , .
The defense was
lead by Kenny with 34
defensive points, with
