HES receives new principal
Jack Thompson, new Heppner Elementary School principal.
Coming to Heppner
after 15 years on the “wet”
side in Salem , Jack
Thompson has taken over
the position as principal at
Heppner Elementary School.
This is Thompson’s
first administrative job, but
he has been active in schools
in Salem area for the past 15
years. He began with two-
and-a-half years at Sublimity
teaching Title I math and
reading. He then moved on
to Brooks Elementary where
he taught eighth grade and
was also their technology
teacher. He continued his
teaching career at Leslie
Middle School in the Salem-
Keizer area, where he taught
math and science for seven
years. His final year at Leslie
was spent as the “behavioral

d e sc rib e s as a sort o f
assistant principal who is
m ainly in charge o f
discipline.
T hom pson is not
new to the east side of the
state; he re c eiv e d his
b a c h e lo r's degree from
E astern O regon State
College in La Grande. He
then went on to receive his
m a s te r’s degree; from
Portland State University.
Wanting to return to
the east side, Thompson was
casually looking for a job in
the area and was excited
w hen a jo b o p en ed in
H eppner. A fter being
accepted for the position,
Thompson moved his family,
wife D eanna, their three
d a u g h ters, B rooke, 12,
Brittney, 10 and Ashley, 7,
and the family Chihuahua,
Nikki, to Heppner. They are
all excited to be here and
love the m any o u td o o r
activities available, including
cam ping, fish in g and
hunting.
Thompson said his
main goal for the school year
is to continue the great job
the school has already been
doing in meeting the AYP
goals of the No Child Left
Behind Act. He is also going
to be active in helping start
a new read in g m astery
program in the school.
He is also looking
forward to working with the
staff and community. “I am
amazed at this school and the
com m unity pride and
