ODOT’s
IVipCheck.com
improves services
After a very busy
five years in service,
TripCheck.com is upgrading
its image and enhancing its
services. TripCheck.com is
ODOT’s traveler informa
tion web site offering road
conditions, construction up
dates, and incident reports.
The improved navigation on
the new site will provide
faster access to all of its most
popular information. Sever
al new features will make the
site even more valuable to
users, including:
• an “Alert!” box,
offering a quick view of high
impact events such as high
way closures and severe
winter weather (an example
is Portland’s ice storm last
January);
• an Announcements
section, informing visitors of
important new s about
TripCheck (such as new ser
vices);
• a new Travel Cen
ter section, containing infor
mation about roadside res
taurants, lodging, attrac
tions, scenic byways, Sno-
Parks, and more;
• default page capa
bility, allowing users to des
ignate their most viewed
page as a home page; and’
• the ability to
choose up to 10 different
camera shots on a custom
ized page.
These upgrades, and
more planned for the near
future, are in response to
user feedback, according to
Galen McGill, manager of
ODOT’s Intelligent Trans
portation Systems (ITS).
“We’re seeing the
number of visitors grow ev
ery year,” said McGill. “Peo
ple are using the site more
all year round, for travel and
trip planning. In 2004, we
averaged over one million
site visits per month.”
McGill is quick to
point out the teamwork it
has taken to redesign the site
and make it even more, use
ful to travelers. ODOT part
nered with the Oregon Trav
el Information Council, the
state4 agency responsible for
the blue services signs along
state highways, to add road
side lodging, restaurant, at
traction, and gas station in
formation to the site.
“Our partnership on
this enhancement with the
Oregon Travel Information
Council has lead to many
great ideas,” McGill said.
“We really appreciate the
work they’ve done to pro
vide Oregonians with valu
able travel inform ation
through our site.”
The newly designed
site makes popular pages
much easier to find, and now,
frequent users can bookmark
favorite pages, customize
camera pages to include the
ones they use most often,
and learn almost instantly of
major road incidents and
weather im pacts to the
roads.
This web site up
grade is the first step of ad
ditional planned improve
ments.
“We want to contin
ue to offer information in
formats that meet our cus
tomers’ needs, whether that
is the internet, cable TV, or
our 511 phone system ,”
McGill said. “In the near fu
ture, we will be providing
TripCheck.com information
formatted for PDAs and new
cell phones and other wire
less devices.”
Improved public
transportation information
will be available in the fall of
2008, McGill added.”
Referred to as the
“Regional Trip Planner," the
service will offer travelers
enhanced abilities to plan
trips in and around Oregon
and even into Washington
via public transportation by
using TripCheck.com.
In the m eantim e,
travelers can continue to use
TripCheck.com’s 150-plus
“road cams” and up-to-date
road construction and inci
dent reports, port o f entry
and other important com
mercial vehicle information,
and new roadside travel de-
tails-all to make traveling in
Oregon safer and easier.
