The 2005 baseball
season for the H eppner
Mustangs came to an end at
Warrenton as they lost to the
W arriors 10-0 in the first
round o f the O SA A /U S
Bank/Les Schwab Class 2A

successful season with a 21
and 6 reco rd and said
goodbye to four seniors in
Josh Gutierrez, Jode Coil,
Kory Paullus and from lone,
Nick Christman
The Warriors scored
a run in the first and added
four more with two out in
the second and held the 5-0
lead through four-and-a-half
innings, as the M ustangs
couldn’t get anything going
They added five more in the
fifth to put the game away.
The Mustangs were
held to five hits with junior
Dan Basile getting two o f
them C hristm an had a
double, Coil a single and

picked up the other hit

Local fiddlers win at Oregon
State Fiddlers championships
Two local fiddlers,
E ric Jepsen and Alex
C arlson, recently joined
som e 80 fid d lers from
around the state to compete
for cash prizes and awards in
the 40th annual Oregon Old
Time
F iddle
State
C h am p io n sh ip s held at
C h em ek eta C om m unity
College in Salem
On Saturday night,
May 20, Carlson teamed up
with Amanda Tullis from
Pendleton to play in the twin
fiddling competition. In this
competition, one player has
the melody and the other the
harmony part. There were 13
pairs o f fiddlers o f all ages
in the competition this year
and

Tullis received fifth place
awards for their efforts.
In the junior division
o f the competition, for ages
13-17, th e re w ere 15
contestants The fiddlers
w ere required to play a
round consisting o f three
tunes: a hoedown, a waltz
and a tune o f their choice
There was a four-m inute
time limit to complete their
round Five judges were in
another part o f the building
and could
hear the
c o n te s ta n ts via a sound
system, but could not see
them o r know w ho was
playing. Contestants were
only identified to the judges
by a c o n testa n t number.
They were also allowed up
to three back up musicians.
Peter Willis o f Salem and
Dan E m ert and Alan
Feves o f Pendleton played
backup guitar and string bass
for the boys. Both Jepsen
and Carlson were among
the top five finalists in their
age division after the first
round They had to play
an o th er round o f th ree
different tunes in the finals
on Saturday night, May 21.
Winners were then
chosen based on their total
p o in ts
from
both
rounds. Jepsen took first
place and Carlson finished
third. They plan to continue
on and compete in the junior
division o f th e N ational
O ldtim e
F id d le
Championships, which will
be held in Weiser, ID, the
third week o f June. Jepsen,
as a sta te w inner, will
perform in the C ertified
C o m p etitio n

Contest as well.

Neighborhood Center, June
2 from 5-7 p.m and June 3
from 4-6 p.m. To participate,
children must be 4 prior to
Aug 1 and no older than 11
by Aug. 1 If the child hasn’t
played b efo re, a b irth
c e rtific a te needs to be
presented at registration
Cost for soccer will be $35
for the first child and $30 for
each additional child.

team
concluded its season by
having eight athletes qualify
at the
d istric t
level
to compete in the OS AA 1A
State Track Championship
Competition held at Western
O reg o n U n iv ersity in
Monmouth, May 20 and 21
Kelly Thompson, a
junior, went on to claim
m edals at the state
ch am p io n sh ip s in th re e
events. Thompson finished
third in a photo finish with
the second place winner in
the 200-meter race with a
time o f 23 86 seconds. He
also finished third in the 400-
meter run with a time o f
51.27 seconds and was fifth
in the 100-meter dash with a
time o f 12.02 seconds.
Thompson also set a
new school record for lone
in the 400-meter run during
the district track meet His
new record is 51.24 seconds
The old record was held by
Andrew Rietmann

hurdles, Grams was eleventh
w ith a tim e o f 19.11
seconds. She was tenth in the
300-m eter hurdles with a
time o f 51 34 seconds. Her
tim e in the 3 0 0 -m eter
hurdles this year was faster
than last year when she
finished fifth in the state, but
the competition in hurdles
was tougher this year
VandenBrink came
in twelfth in the 800-meter
run with a time o f 2 minutes
39 90 seconds Just the week
before at the district track
meet, VandenBrink had run
2 minutes 35.92 seconds and
almost broke the lone school
record with that time
In the 3000-m eter
run, Amy Jepsen finished
ninth w ith a tim e o f 13
minutes 5 86 seconds The
time was a personal best for
Jepsen by 14 seconds.
The track team only
loses one senior, Kim Morris
and coach Del LaRue is
looking forward to an even
better season next year

Thirty-two students
in grades six through eight
turned out for the lone
Middle School track team
this spring They -were
coached by Dean Robinson
and competed in six meets.
The final championship meet
was held at the new track in
Stanfield on May 6. There
were 10 teams competing:
