Mustang JVs drop two at Riverside

Mustang JV baseball team
ended th e ir season by
dropping a pair o f games to
the visiting Riverside Pirates
by scores of 3-1 and 15-6 on
M onday, May 9 as the
second game was called after
four innings by darkness and
rain The Mustangs ended
their season with a 9 and 2
record
The first game was a
pitchers’ duel between the
Mustangs’ Nathan Kennedy
and the Pirates’ Joey Parrish
as runs or hits were hard to
come by. The Pirates scored
a run in the top of the first
but the Mustangs came back
witli one o f th e ir own.
K ennedy led o ff w ith a
single, Cody Hollis sacrificed
him to second, went to third
on a passed ball and scored
as Andre Rauch was thrown
out after striking out
The Pirates scored
single runs in the third and
fourth and held on for the
win.
K ennedy allow ed
just three hits, struck out
five, walked two and gave up
two earned runs in going the
distance
Robbie Smith was
two for three, Kennedy was
two for four and Hollis went
one for tw o for the
Mustangs
The night cap was a
different story as both teams’
pitchers had trouble finding
the strike zone.
The P irates again
took an early 1-0 lead, but
the Mustangs responded in
the bottom o f the first with
four runs o f their own. Hollis
was hit by a pitch and Rauch
followed that up with a home
run to centerfield. Nacho
Elguezabal w as hit by a
p itch, C o lto n H anson
reached on an error, Justin
Archer reached on an error,
Elguezabal scored on a wild
pitch and Sean Murray had
an RBI double
The Pirates scored
two in the second but the
Mustangs came back with
two o f their own when Hollis
reached on an e rro r and
scored on a single by Rauch
who ended up scoring on an
Elguezabal fielder’s choice.
The wheels came off'
for the M ustangs as their
control problems led to the
Rockets scoring seven runs
in the third on one hit and
five more in the fourth on
two hits.
The Mustangs hurt
themselves with 17 walks
and three hit batters while
leaving 10 runners on base
Rauch went two for
two with three RBI and two
runs scored Murray went
one for two with a double
and Hollis scored twice

picked up where they left off
in tak in g a 6-0 win on
Thursday, May 12 over the
visiting Tigers in Columbia
Basin Conference play.
The Mustangs, 7-3
in the CBC and 16-5 overall,
picked up their sixth win in
a row were to be at Pilot
Rock on Saturday for a key
CBC d o u b leh ead er to
determine play-off positions
for the chance to play at the
d istric t to u rn am en t in
Pendleton on Sunday, May
21 .
The Mustangs broke
a scoreless tie in the second
inning getting singles from
Kory Paullus, Quinn Peck an
RBI single from M att
McCabe and one from Sloan
Keithley to take a 1-0 lead

home run to make it 4-0.
The M ustangs did
some two-out damage in the
fourth when Colton Hanson
singled, Coil doubled and
Josh Gutierrez singled them
home to make it 6-0.

collected 12 hits as a team,
with eight o f the nine getting
at least one hit. Even they
were missing two starters
and had players moved to

Hanson making a tough play
behind second base and Peck
playing well behind the plate

season with a loss at home, Saturday, May 14 against a
combined Stanfield and Echo team
Babe Ruth baseball golf tournament

A Babe Ruth Baseball golf tournament will be held
on Sunday, May 29. The tournament will be an 18-hole,

Columbia Basin Electric Co
operative has hired South
eastern Reprographics (SRI)
to conduct a complete GPS
field inventory as part of our
new mapping program.
This will require that SRI visits
each pole, meter and pad-
mounted device on the CBEC
system. SRI will be using pick
ups and ATVs with CBEC
markings on them for in-

with his essay on “What Old
Glory Means to Me.”
Smith earned a $50
savings bond for placing in
the local competition and an

savings bond for his win at
the state level His essay will
be forwarded to the national
Elks competition
Smith is the son o f
Jymme Franzwa of Heppner
and a sixth grade student at
Heppner Elementary School
The annual program
is open to all sixth through
eighth grade students and is
sp o n so red by the Elks.
Participants had to write a
one-page essay on this year’s
to p ic, “ W hat Old G lory
Means to Me.”
“There were some
really excellent essays,” said
L indsay K incaid, local
committee chair “I’m very
pro u d o f all our local
students who participated,
they really put some thought
into these essays.”

rule as the Mustangs won
12-2 and took the second
game 12-1 The Mustangs,

season with a 9 and 3 record
and m oved to 18 and 5
overall, were to host Dufur
on Tuesday, May 17 with the
winner to move on to the

Pendleton on Saturday, May

The Mustangs broke
open a scoreless first game
in the top o f the third when
Matt McCabe led off with a
double and scored when
Kyle Carlson hit a long home
run to left-centerfield Then
with two out, Josh Gutierrez
singled, Nick C hristm an
walked and Kory Paullus hit
a home run to left field to
give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead
They added another
run in the fo u rth when
Carlson hit another bomb in
almost the exact spot his first
home run went to, making it
6 - 0 .
The M ustangs put
the game away in the fifth
when Quinn Peck singled,
Dan B asile doubled and
McCabe scored both with a
d o uble Sloan K eithley
walked, Carlson hit into a
fielder’s choice, Jode Coil
had an RBI d o uble and
Gutierrez scored two on a
single Paullus reached on an
error and Peck reached on
an o th er e rro r to score
another run to make it 12-0.
The Rockets scored
two runs in the bottom half
and had runners at first and
third, but the Mustangs were
able to get out o f the jam and
end the game
Gutierrez went four
innings scattering five hits,
striking out three, walking
one and allowing no runs to
pick up the win. Christman
pitched the fifth, allowing
two runs on two hits while
striking out two.

Gutierrez went two for four
with two RBI and two runs

The Mustangs again
scored first in the second
game when Basile, McCabe
and Carlson all walked to
load the bases and Coil hit a
sacrifice fly to score Basile
in the top o f the second
In the third, Paullus
led off with a home run, Peck
doubled and ended up
scoring on a wild pitch to
make it 3-0.
They sco red four
more in the fourth when Coil
singled, Gutierrez reached
on an error, Christman had
an RBI single on a wild pitch
and B asile had an RBI
double.
The Rockets got one
back in the bottom half, but
back came the Mustangs in
the fifth with five more to put
the game out o f reach. Matt
Kenny and Carlson singled

scoring on a wild pitch. Coil
was hit by a pitch, with two
out Paullus was intentionally
w alked, Peck w alked to
force in a run and Basile and
McCabe reached on errors
to score three more runs to
make it 12-1.

The United Methodist Church will be hosting Clare
Kennedy and her husband from Fossil They took a trip to
Honduras to do a mission project for the church They
built fences, painted and took part o f the community they
were serving
The Kennedys will be sharing their pictures and
comments during the regular worship service at the United
Methodist on Sunday, May 22 at 10 30 a m in the sanctuary
