Lieuallen, 88, former Chan­
cellor o f the Oregon State
System o f Higher Education,
died Wednesday, April 20,
2005.
Lieuallen was born
in 1916 When he was 5
years old, his parents moved
the family to Morrow Coun­
ty to rent wheat land He at­
tended a one-room school-
house in the area After the
family lost the farm in 1933,
they moved to lone, where
he graduated from school
A fter w orking for
three years on area ranches,
Lieuallen earned enough
money to attend Pacific Uni­
versity, along with a half-tu­
ition scholarship He gradu­
ated with a bachelor o f sci­
ence degree in physical edu­
cation
At college, he met
his fu tu re wife, B arbara
Wales, and they were mar­
ried in Bend on Feb 20,
1943.
Lieuallen served in
the US Navy on the destroy­
er, USS Patterson. He re­
ceived a bronze star during
his time in the service.
A fter the war,
L ieuallen p erform ed his
graduate work at the Univer­
sity o f Oregon, completing
his master’s degree in edu­
cation administration. After
graduation, he returned to a
teaching position in Pilot
Rock, but was then recom­
mended for the job o f regis­
trar at Oregon College o f
Education (now W estern
Oregon University) in Mon­
mouth He and his family
m oved to M onm outh in
1946.
Jn 1953, he moved
tp Menlo Park, CA where he
received his doctorate's de­
gree in education from Stan­
ford University
Late in D ecem ber
1961, then-Governor Mark

Lieuallen, at the recommen­
dation o f the State Board of
Higher Education, to assume
the job o f Chancellor o f the
State System The family
moved to Eugene w here
they remained for 20-1/2
years at Tree Tops, the offi­
cial Chancellor’s residence.
He resigned from his posi­
tion at the end o f June 1982.
After retirement, he
was drafted by the World
Bank to go to China in 1984
to advise the government on
m odernizing the teach er
training colleges While in
China, Lieuallen, his wife
and grandson, was hurried
out o f Tienanmen Square in
June o f 1989 as the rioting
began and caught the last
flight out o f Beijing In all,
he made eight trips to Chi­
na, m ost to the interior,
where few westerners had
previously visited
Lieuallen is survived
by his family, friends and
colleagues

He was born Oct
14, 1929, at Pendleton, to
Fred E and Sophia L.

Pendleton and graduated
from Pendleton High School
in 1947 After high school he
attended Eastern Oregon
State College at La Grande
in 1947-1948 and studied
drafting During the 1948-
1949 school year he attended
Cal Aero Tech A fter his
college studies he entered
th e N avy w here, in the
summer o f 1952, he was
stationed in the A leutian
Islands, was later stationed
in Hawaii for two years and
served at Moffit Field in CA
for two years
On Jan. 20, 1961, he
married Wanda Marie Black
at Pendleton They had four
daughters, Rondi, Vicki,
Shelli and Shari
Ober was employed
at Farm ers In su ran ce in
clerical work and sales, did
clerical work and planted
trees with the Forest Service,
worked as a kiln operator at
US Gypsum, drove truck for
Bonbright Oil, then worked
in maintenance at Eastern
Oregon State Hospital until
his retirement
He enjoyed airplanes
and attended the Reno Air
Races for 29 years He also
loved cars and ow ned
approximately 30 between
high school and his last car
His favorite car was a red

a vvhite top. He enjoyed

He was a member of

Albert Franklin Lamb and
B ernice Jane (B ald w in )
Lamb She grew up in the
Salem area and in Puyallup,
WA, graduating from Puyal­
lup High School in 1953.
After graduation, she moved
with her family to Heppner
She later attended business
school in Spokane, WA.
She married Robert
E. Cunningham, o f Heppner,
on Feb. 20, 1955 in Hood
River. The Cunningham s
lived in Pendleton, Salem,
H erm iston and O n tario ,
while raising four children:
Michael Eugene, Patrick
Gene, Karen Lea and Rich­
ard Shan Birindelli worked
for several employers in On­
tario, eventually settling with
Western Bank.
In 1984, she trans­
ferred to Bandon with West­
ern Bank, where she met and
married Eugene Inks.
In 2000, she retired
from Western Bank, moved
to Areata, CA and married
Mario Birindelli. She was
diagnosed with myelofibro­
sis, a disease o f the bone
marrow, in the spring o f
2001 .
She enjoyed arts and
crafts and spending time
with her children and grand­
children. She also enjoyed
living near the ocean, where
she could walk on the beach
and watch incoming storms
Survivors include
her husband, Mario o f Area­
ta, CA; brother, W allace
Wayne Lamb o f Lake Os­
wego; son, Pat and his wife,
C atherine and daughter,
Erin, o f Corvallis; daughter,
Karen and her son, Jeffrey,
of Madras; son, Shan and his
wife, Jacki and son, Bran­
don, o f Myrtle Point; and
two stepchildren, Rusty Bir­
indelli and Colleen Moore
She was preceded in death
by her parents, brothers, Al­
bert Harry Lamb and Ken­
neth Wesley Lamb and son,

He was bom July 1,
1960, at Grand Forks, ND,
to Orville E and Mary Ann
L. Sundby Gunderson. He
was raised and atten d ed

W hile in high school he
worked in farming He later
worked in the oil fields in
Western North Dakota be­
fore moving West. He settled
at Irrig o n in 1983 and
worked in farming. He had
been employed at Frederick-
son’s Farms, Western Alfal­
fa, Carl Smith and various
o th e r farm s until failing
health no longer allowed him
to work.
He enjoyed the out­
doors, spending time with his
family, camping, fishing,
traveling and barbecues
Survivors include his
parents, Orville and Mary
Ann Gunderson o f Grand
Forks; sons, Joseph Focht o f
P en d leto n and Jam es
“Jamie” Gunderson of Hum-

Monday, May 30 in honor of
Memorial Day. Due to the
closure, the deadline for
news articles and advertise-
ments for the June 1 paper
will be Friday, May 27 at 5
p.m. The office will reopen
on Tuesday, May 31, with its
usual hours o f 9 a m to 5
pm .
