Keithley Everett O Keithley, 93, a longtime Heppner res ident, died Friday, April 29, 2005 at Summit Springs Re tirement Village in Condon A funeral will begin at 2 p m , Thursday, May 5 at the Heppner Elks Lodge Concluding service and buri al will follow at the Hepp ner Masonic Cemetery. He was born Dec 28, 1911, in the Eightmile area near Heppner, to Oscar and Eunice Estab Keithley He was raised in the Eight- mile area where he attended school On June 3, 1935, he married Helen Grabill at lone The couple moved to Baker in 1937, where he was employed by the rail road at Sumpter and also ran a transfer company in Bak er In 1945, the Keith- leys returned to lone and shortly thereafter moved to Heppner He w orked for Clarence Rosewall as shop foreman at the Heppner Ford Garage In 1962, they moved to Condon where he operat ed the Texaco station and also sold cars for Heppner Ford While in Condon he served as president o f the Commercial Club In 1967, he returned to Heppner where he sold cars and did carpentry work. He worked as a crop adjus tor for Farmer’s Insurance and built grain elevators be fore retiring in 1977. After retirement he went to work for Morrow County in maintenance and parks He enjoyed working in the outdoors and working during harvest He enjoyed hunting until he was 88 He was an active 60- year member o f Heppner BPOE 358 where he had served as Exalted Ruler and Trustee He had been a mem ber o f the lone M asonic Lodge He enjoyed baseball, had been a Little League umpire as well as a member o f the old Heppner town baseball team Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, E. Laveme and Ginger Keithley o f Heppner; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Jerry K loeppel o f Vernal, UT, Sharon and Robert Harrison of Lexington, and Trisha and Pat Sweeney o f Heppner; his companion for the past 17 years, Maude Hughes; 14 grandchildren, 27 g re a t g ra n d c h ild re n ; and one great-great-grandchild He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Kei thley in 1988, a daughter, Shirley Keithley in 1943, his brother, Howard Keithley, sisters, Nola Warmuth and Alice Anderson; a great- grandson, Roger Palmer, and a great-granddaughter, Am ber Lynch Memorial contribu tions may be made to the Heppner Elks Renovation Fund, PO Box 494, Hepp ner, OR 97836 Sweeney Mortuary o f Heppner is in charge o f arrangements Ida May Reed Ida May Reed, 90, of Boardman, a longtime Hood River resident, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at her home surrounded by family and careg iv er/g ran d d au g h ter Fay A celebration o f life service was held April 30 at Anderson’s Tribute Center in Hood River Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Poplar Bluff, MO One o f 14 children, Reed was born March 27, 1915, to George and Lottie Allison, at Chaonia, MO She was raised and educat ed in Missouri where she completed her nursing de gree When she was 16, Reed married her sw eet heart, Robert Reed In 1955, the family moved west to White Salm on, WA While living in White Salmon, she worked in a care facility that she and her hus band, R obert, eventually bought. They ran R eed’s R est Home for over 25 years. Reed was a home maker and her greatest love was being around family and cooking large family meals She loved to sew, play cards, raise a garden and flowers, cook, can and do things for others She was a longtime member o f the N azarene Church and had been in volved in the creation o f the Senior Center in Boardman S urvivors include her son, Daniel Reed and his wife, Julie, o f P ortland; daughters, Laura Jeffries and her husband, W illard, o f Hood River and Eva Ray and her husband, George, in Mis souri; grandchildren, Bar bara, Kathryn, Fay, Ronnie, Renna, Vicki, Vivian, Rob erta, Darla and Rhonda; 20 g re a t-g ra n d c h ild re n ; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Zak Morrow SWCD Hays joins BEO lending staff E Zak, 60, o f to meet “Butch” Smith Irrigon, Walter died Friday, April John Hays has joined The M orrow Soil Charles M “Butch” Smith, 65, o f Boardman, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston A memorial service was held at the Church o f Jesus Christ o f Latter-day Saints in Hermiston Private family burial will be in the Hermiston Cemetery He was bom July 22, 1939, at Pendleton, to Jew ell and Doris Welch Smith He was raised in Pi lot Rock and later Echo where he participated in football, basketball and base ball while attending Echo High School He graduated from Echo High School in 1957. He moved to Rose- burg where he attended op tom etry college for tw o years He then returned to Hermiston and went to work at Pendleton Grain Growers for a time before going to w ork at M arlette Homes w here he was em ployed from 1968 until 1974 On Dec 23, 1969, he married Carol Johnson at Walla Walla In 1975, he went to work at Inland Empire Bank in Hermiston and worked there until 1984, when he started S m ith ’s C ustom Farming He owned and op erated the business until 1994. In 1995, he returned to work at Banner Bank, first working as a loan officer and then working as a field rep resentative. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, especially cribbage and most o f all spending time with his chil dren and grandchildren Smith had v o lu n teered at the Umatilla Coun ty Fair for the past several years. After moving to Ir rigon, he went to work for U nion P acific R ailroad where he was employed at the time o f his death He and R honda Clark were married March 30, 2004, at Lewiston, ID Zak enjoyed going for drives to see new areas and enjoyed traveling It was said he had a great sense o f humor and enjoyed making people laugh. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Zak o f Irrig on; stepson, Chris Clark and his wife, Dana, o f Pray, MT; son, Walter Zak Jr. o f Dux- bury, MA; daughter, Jo Ann M olner and her husband, Zoltán, in Virginia; and four grandchildren.
