single-famil> home Ifyou are

concerned about finding a

This is a large segment o f the

The mechanics o f selling a

h a \c cop ies o f the master
deed, rules, regulations and

each owner's rights, limita

Your agent should be famil

In addition, your agent should

Jerry and JoyceKay Holloman, April Yard of the Month.
Submitted bv Kav Proctor
The first yard in
2005 named Heppner’s Yard
o f the M onth belongs to
Jerry
and
JoyceK ay
H ollom on at 140 N orth
C hase The H o llo m o n ’s
share their yard with their
cat, Frank, and with
memories o f their daughters,
Kaedene Bailey and Darcy
Coil, growing up there The
girl’s tetherball still stands
g u ard
although
the
basketball hoop has been
turned into a clothesline.
Willow Creek flows
by their backyard along with
memories o f Hollomon’s six
grandchildren, especially
Jode Coil, doing lots o f
fishing along its banks The
creek has also brought
wildlife including raccoons,
beavers and blue herons.
In terestin g ly , they have
never had problems with
flooding even though their
home predates the dam
Chase Street ran with high
w ater in the early 1970s
once, but did not damage
their property.
W illow
C reek
figures in their lives again by
the name o f one o f their
businesses, Willow Creek
Realty, on Main Street Their
retail store. The Shoebox,
closed awhile ago leaving a
gap
in
d o w n to w n ’s
businesses, but the T-Shirt
store and Je rry ’s B arber
Shop are still active and a
short two-block walk away.
Hollomon’s moved
to Heppner in 1962 after
living in North Bend and
Portland Their gardening
was limited before moving
here, but JoyceKay’s father
grew over 100 fuchsias in
Western Oregon
A fter p u rch asin g
their home in 1972 from Len
Ray and Annie Schwarz, the
home’s first occupants, the
couple began adding their
own touches such as chain
link fencing in 1979, a cover
to the patio and underground
sprinklers a few years ago
A ccenting their yard are
various antiques and rustics
collected over the years such
as wagon and buggy wheels,
a miniature windmill, iron
bed frames, a graniteware
coffee pot, a team hitch from
Hardman and a bird feeder
made from an auger and disc
from Kenny Batty
A small bricked area
off the patio is a reminder of
a historic fire in Heppner in
the early 1980s The U S
Post O ffice and o th er
buildings burnt and the
Shoebox lost its roof and had
heavy w ater and sm oke
dam age
Jerry
and
JoyceKay’s business revived
from the disaster and they
used some o f the building’s
bricks in their yard
Jerry's favorite plant
is a peach tree that produces
excellent fresh fruit They
both enjoy the fresh
raspberries they grow along
with home grown tomatoes,
carrots and rhubarb souped
up with rich compost they
produce near their vegetable
garden W hile JoyceKay
doesn’t have one favorite
plant, she w as looking
forward to a pink clematis
that surprised her with a
w hitish
c o lo r
upon
flowering.
Fam ily
is
the
dominant theme throughout
the H o llo m o n 's yard
Cement curbing that outlines
neat flower beds was done
by their son-in-law , Ken
Bailey. A large snowball tree
began as a start from
Jo y c e K a y ’s p aren ts in
Albany. Garden ornaments
were given to JoyceK ay
from her aunt in Montana
Various lilacs were gifts from
their daughters and family
friend, Jackie A llstott. A
front yard sycamore with its
characteristic peeling bark
replaced a weeping birch
tree given to Jerry by his
father
W hile Jerry and
JoyceKay Hollomon have
grown a yard worthy o f its
Yard o f the M onth
recognition, they have also
show n us how to grow
family roots that truly makes
life worthwhile
The Heppner Yard
o f the Month recognition is
co-sponsored by Green Feed
and Seed, th e H eppner
Garden Club, the City o f
Heppner and Heppner TV.
