As I co n tem p late
what to write in this week’s
colum n, 1 can ’t help but
think about the hurry the
world seems to be in and
what causes this We’re now
a society raised on sound
bytes, high speed internet,
cell phones, traveling as fast
as we can and operating on
schedules that encourage
stress and anxiety, resulting
in the growing inability to be
entertained by peace and
quiet Parents are running
their children from one event
to another with barely time
fo r
dinner
or
com m unication G ranted,
this is from a 60 year old, but
1 can't help but fell humanity
needs to get back in touch
w ith w h a t’s w ithin The
crazy thing is “running as fast
as we can” doesn't give us
any more time on earth; in
fact, the opposite often holds
true
Granddaughters this
past weekend enhanced the
rewards of kicking back We
took a walk down to the
creek w here D estinee
perched herself out on a
rock, “just to listen.”
“Gramsie,” she said,
“it’s so quiet here and so
relaxing ” S h e ’s usually
swimming in meets, climbing
trees, playing the piano and
racing here and there, but she
knew to take advantage of
the moment Adults forget
C ontrast that with
the man who came bursting
through the Chamber office
door Monday to tell me that
H eppner w ould not be
getting his business because
in the process of researching
the locatio n , one o f his
p eo p le had received a
speeding ticket and they
c e rta in ly c o u ld n ’t do
business here if they had to
travel that slow Pacification,
explaining some lives had
been lost, safety and positive
interaction just didn’t cut it
Apparently, the state where
he
cam e
from
has
u n m onitored
stra ig h t
stretches o f road and in the
valley everything moves at a
faster pace My gift to him
would be an hour by a creek
o r on to p o f a hill and
convincing him that it’s ok
to slow down 1 am afraid I
wasn’t very successful He
was in a big hurry
And why the top o f
a hill, you might ask? Hilltop
experiences include Sandhill
cranes going north, eagles
soaring, a sunset or sunrise,
watching the world go by
beneath you and seeing that,
in the whole scope of things,
you along are p retty
insignificant It helps put life
into perspective, as does a
walk, shutting off the TV,
losing the cell phone and
leaving the internet for a
while
So, take a deep
breath, look around, take a
walk and then kick in with
high energy since “A Wee Bit
O ’ Ireland” is only a week
away. It d o e sn ’t tak e a
leprechaun to tell you that
show casing H eppner in
M arch isn’t very restful,
rewarding yes, restful, no.
Our great community knows
how to entertain visitors and
without all o f you, ‘tis sure
it wouldn’t happen Laugh,
enjoy, have a little fun and
pat yourselves on the back.

It’s not whether you win or lose,
but how you play
theffame
The game is just a game... it’s how you play that makes it fun, or frustrating,
or dangerous. It’s true for all types of games - including gambling. Less than
three percent of Oregonians may have a gambling problem - but when they
play, it’s more than a game. The way they play puts them and their families
at financial and emotional risk.
If playing isn’t fun anymore, call:
