Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - FIVE Local students win at Bible quiz competition Legion Auxiliary Sheriff's Report Six T and T (Truth and Training) Bible Club members competed recently in the annual Awana Bible Q uiz C o m p e titio n in Richland, WA This year’s contest included some 40 teams from several churches in Richland, K ennew ick, Pasco, Yakima, Walla Walla and M ilton-Freew ater, as well as the three local teams sponsored by L exington Baptist Church A team consisted o f one to two club members. There w ere six different c o n te sts covering th ree Awana handbooks for boys and girls in the third through six grades The contestants started out with multiple- choice questions about the B ible Then, the m ore d ifficult speed quizzing section included reciting passages o f Scripture from memory, word perfect and knowing other Bible facts. Daniel VanCleave and Tim Nelson, both fourth g ra d e rs from H eppner, competed as a team in the b oys’ third through fifth grade competition on Book One They finished in first place and received a team plaque and individual gold medallions. In the third through fifth grade girls’ division, Kellie Nelson, fourth grade, and Stephanie Schuler, fifth grade, both o f H eppner, claimed first place honors in the Book One competition They received individual golden medallions for their efforts and a team plaque as well. Awana Bible Club m eets every W ednesday night at 6:30 p m at the Lexington Baptist Church The “Sparks” Club division is for kindergarten to second grade and the “T and T” Club is for third through sixth graders. Believe it or not, 45 young people in grades 3-6 gave up half o f their “free F riday” to attend a free w ritin g w ork sh o p at H ep p n er E lem entary. Students from lone, Spray and Heppner attended the free workshop to learn new, and touch-up old, writing skills. Josh Browning and seven o f his Heppner Junior High L anguage A rts students joined in to help in the day’s activities The classes w ere taught by volunteers from Heppner Elementary- Sherry M atteso n , M ary Ann Elguézabal, Karen Smith- Griffith, Sue Gibbs, Cara Osmin, Robin Jones, Tracie Bunch and Jannie Allen Karen Clough organized and served the refresh m en ts during the morning break Y oung w riters attended four o f the six classes offered, with a snack together midway through the morning. Classes included w riting about A braham L incoln, w in ter sto ry s ta rte rs, using origam i fortune tellers to create a story, writing silly songs, seven sentence stories and limericks A writer attending the workshop told friends at snack time, “My mom made me come, but I am having a lot o f fun This is really cool.” Yes, writing was fun on a Friday. The A m erican Legion Auxiliary, Heppner Unit #87, is now accepting applications for the 2005 Oregon Girls’ State session to be held at W illam ette University in Salem from June 12-18 This pro g ram sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary provides an opportunity for high school juniors to learn the inner w orkings o f our form o f g o v e rn m e n t, inclu d in g p o litical p ro c e sses, law m aking, citizen sh ip and patriotism B asic c rite ria for acceptance includes being a current member o f the junior class or the equivalent if home schooled, have an interest in government and possess a desire to develop le ad e rsh ip sk ills and confidence while building a lastin g fo u n d a tio n for success in their personal and professional lives. Last chance for HLL registration The last chance for players to re g iste r for Heppner Little League will be Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26 at the Heppner N eig h b o rh o o d C en ter Friday registration will be held from 5-7 p m and Saturday registration from 9 a m to 1 p.m. Boys ages 4-12 and girls ages 4-14 are eligible to enroll to play whiffle ball, T- ball, m inor and m ajors baseball/soflball and girls jr/ sr softball Cost for registration is S30 per player o f $60 per family.
